Re: Alternator swap?
What equipment is in your car that makes it need a higher output alternator? Why would the alternator ruin your battery; that's more of a regulator or wiring issue. If you go with an internally regulated alternator, make sure you get the 3-wire, not the 1-wire version so you retain your GEN/FAN warn...

Re: '66 Sprint Convertible resto aka "my first car/first Corvair"
Yesterday: The powertrain went in! :woo: A milestone day for the so-called Craigmobile; at least that's what Cody calls it. IMO, the easiest and safest way to install the transaxle is to do it piecemeal. First, the input shaft goes into the clutch, then the differential goes onto the bell housing: I...

Re: main fuse box under dash
Also - "Foot dimmer switch not working" is usually just a bad switch. They're inexpensive and easily replaced. There's a remote chance the connector into the trunk has a bad contact. It's unlikely all four high beams are burned out but that's a remote chance too. If your high beam indicato...

Re: main fuse box under dash
You're in the right place! I manufacture fuse panels for the street rod market and I build a special model just for Corvairs. It's called the BlackBox Hp. FWIW, I've been into Corvairs for over 50 years. I have kits for 60-64 car, 61-65 FC, 65-6 cars, and 67-9 cars. Here's what the kit looks like in...

Re: K47 - Oil Bath Precleaners - Definitive Article
Thanks for putting it all together, including the time-line. While I've seen many K47 Oil-Bath systems, and even more LMs that "used to have" K47 oil-bath as evidenced by the bracket, unique air cleaner snout, or screw holes for the bracket, I never see K46 HD pre-cleaner aka Desert Air se...

Thanks Tom! The loft access is super handy. The shop addition to our home is new and our county building department is notoriously tough- I can't believe they let me include the trap door and hoist.

Re: '66 Sprint Convertible resto aka "my first car/first Corvair"
This glorious process continues! I'll be sad when it's all done. Fortunately, the finish line is still quite a ways away so there's still lots of fun to be had. As I noted in my last post, I cleaned the last harness in the ultrasonic bath and it cleaned up beautifully. After a few repairs, it was re...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe
Its cool you're so interested in understanding the particulars of your car. :tu: Writers hedged their bets on the 60 4-sp 95hp engine because their existence was more likely than not despite no reported examples hitting the radar in over 60 years. The non-existance of the 60 4-sp transmission is vir...

Re: Silent Cam Gear
DON'T USE IT!!! Fiber cam gears in Corvairs don't last. This one failed after about 5000 miles. Well cared for and carefully driven '66 180 turbo Seniors Division show car. Of course the engine stopped running instantly and valves were bent. Repair required near complete disassembly of the engine an...

Re: Alternator, voltage regulator, and Alt/Gen warning light issues
One thing I see is misconnection of regulator terminal 3 "battery sense"
This one should go to battery (+) junction block or post. I could go on as to why but more simply, it matters where it gets its 12v.

Re: 1960 gas heater install in a 63
Interesting question about the source of fresh air. Here's what's in the '60 service manual description: (emphasis added) "Outside air is drawn through the cowl vent and into the heater through an opening in the right of the fender wheelhouse area and forced into the car interior through the bl...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe
So... since your car has a '60 BR differential and a 63 transmission, someone has definitely altered one or the other because they definitely won't work together. A 60 3-sp differential is set up to accept a 3-sp transmission with a short output shaft like this: (see stub shaft at right) 60 3-sp tra...

Re: Our 1960 Monza Coupe
Regarding "axle length", Rex was referring to the little stub-axles that go into the differential. '60s had two identical "short" stub axles, while open-differentials in 61-64 cars had stub axles of different lengths. Totally inaccurate numbers, but just to give you an idea, &quo...
