Define ‘just fine’?
My experience has been they run ‘just barely’, there’s so much room for improvement it’s hysterical.

Re: Oil Additive
Not really.
100k is probably time for a ring and valve job on these engines, youbstand to gain a lot more by freshening those things up than any additive will ever offer.

Re: Horsepower of Corvair
I tied to mustang dyno my 180, but had problems that day. Bad gas and super hot outside temps (over 95* that day) led to only making 90 or so. My starter even quit working it was so hot!
I really need to revisit the dyno when I get my car back, I want to know what it’s actually doing.

Re: Max oil temp ?
But you know what to look for and know what you’re doing, unfortunately this is one of those engines with sort of a steep learning curve. If you aren’t well versed in tuning, it’s real easy to get into trouble when the hammer drops. That’s why I’m so adamant about having instrumented feedback, so yo...

Re: Max oil temp ?
Some thoughts: If you have chrome rings it's gonna take a whole lot longer than 500 miles to bed them in, standard rings around 1000 and you're probably good to go. The ZDDP additives are supposed to protect flat tappets from scuffing, since modern oils lack the additive packages older oils used to ...

Re: Random thought about installing an ECM in a Corvair
Brad forgot to mention the in-between ignition only solution Megajolt, I made a guide for conversions: http://www.corvairnut.com/EDIS.htm If you need injection as well you can run the same exact ignition and control it with a Megasquirt controller, but you’ll need the injection related parts to make...

Dyno is better of course, but you can get 95% of the way on the street.

Re: 64 spyder burning oil
Another way to tell where it’s coming from is WHEN the smoke starts. If it smokes nearly immediately after startup, your problem is on the intake side of things because it’s being drawn into the engine and burned in the combustion chamber. Could be either the carbon seal in the turbo, or really bad ...

Re: 64 spyder burning oil
On the cold side you’ll never see any evidence of oil, since the fuel moving through the turbo washes away any trace. What’s more likely is a bad turbine seal, which leaves a cloud of burning oil everywhere you go. You can usually see oil wetness dripping down the hot side of it’s leaking, but not a...

Re: Carburetors for a 63 turbo
Miniman82, your input is valued. I know it is asking a lot but you should have a website to document some of the stuff you have done and some helps for us turbo people. I appreciate the CD I purchased from you but I think there are many hear that would benefit from your knowledge. I do have a websi...

Re: Carburetors for a 63 turbo
Here's what stock turbo Corvair engines are and aren't: They are a product of the timeframe they were designed in, and reflect the technology of the day. They are not your moms Honduh, so don't expect to jump in and drive it 400 miles unless you're OCD as f*ck with your maintenance and don't mind so...

Re: Why do I need coil condenser?
It's basically a capacitive filter, keeps noise down and also stores a little energy to help fire the coil. I don't think you'll hurt anything by having another, but it's not required.
