Caveman Refresh after 13 years
I often forget to, or run out of time to participate over here, but I remembered several sites this weekend. As some have seen on FB or other forums While in the states for 13 months waiting out the lockdowns, we had our house painted in Santa Cruz (Bolivia). When we got back I found that one of the...

This picture those the button you press to remove the shaft/knob. Some use a coin or something to help, but mine comes out easily.

That would be fine for Las Vegas, Phoenix, etc. climate. I used a 5W-40 for one change when I was going to drive through an area where the temperature runs in the 115ºF range or higher.

No picture posted. But if your engine is in decent shape, 10W-30 will give your engine a longer life, better starting, and better performance.

Re: Type of engine oil
The Corvair just needs a product that meets the old Dexron III spec. No longer licenses, but produced for all the old cars. It will probably say DEX/Merc, or something like that. It can use the Dexron VI, but does not need that, as it does not run as hot as modern transmissions, although if you do g...

To finish this off, here was my response to Brad "They answered my email, and based on that I recommend against Max Gear. They say their formulas are proprietary, and they mention the synchronizers in relation to the non-corrosive formula. So it is basically a standard sulfur/phos EP, fine for ...

There is one length for all of them as far as I know. I just ordered mine by part number from one of the Vendors, put it on, and have driven 10 years without thinking about it.

Re: Type of engine oil
Good oil to use as far as specs. too viscous for most climates. I would use that where ambient temps are triple digits.

Re: Burning Clutch
If you were able to put it in Park, you have an automatic. No clutch to burn. Probably just spilled oil burning off.

Re: Type of engine oil
Well discussed, some right, some not so. Best thing is to stick to a diesel formulated oil, CI-4 or CJ-4. Amsoil and some others have appropriate oils. If you have standard valve springs maybe you could use an SN oil without a problem. (problems would be over time, not individual changes. You don't ...

Re: 62 Corvair manual transmission oil check/replace
Just make sure the oil you use is GL-4, not GL-5. Recommended 80W-90 or Synthetic 75W-90 GL-4. NOT 85W-90, as it is much more viscous and will cause harder shifts.

Re: 62 Corvair manual transmission oil check/replace
I wish people would not recommend 85W-90. Then they complain about the Corvair transmission, when it is their fault for the wrong oil.
At the most, 80W-90

Re: 62 Corvair manual transmission oil check/replace
80w-90_85w-90.jpg Advice given is 90% correct. Make sure it is GL-4 only. But you will have much better shifting with 75W-90 than 85W-90. 85W-90 is the top end of the huge SAE 90 range. 80W-90 is in the lower part of that range. Several Viar owners have made the switch from 85W-90 to 80W-90 and men...
