Re: key question
The ignition cannot be removed from the dash without a key. Earlys use one key for all locks. Lates had one for ign and doors, another for trunk and glove box. Of course all that can be changed.
Take the glove box lock from your 64 to a locksmith, quick and easy.

Why do you think the head gaskets are going?
You can do that job with only the shop manual to guide you, and you should own that and the Corsa tech guides in any case.

Wouldn't a stock vacuum advance on a stock dist move in exactly the wrong direction on a reversed engine?

Re: Electric engine fans
The stock fan moves enough air for even the wildest high-horse motors. The parasitic HP loss is negligible. With a top quality belt properly installed it is as trouble free as any part on the car. Why put on a part that adds chances of failure to on/off switch, electric motor failure, requires ...

Re: Electric engine fans
The change was made because of the inertia of the steel fan, its weight exacerbated fan belt problems. The original plan for 64 was the same design as the magnesium fan, but in delrin. Turns out when the generator was putting a good charge into the battery at speed tiny droplets of acid were ...

64 and later carbs have that little rubber disc near the base of the carb that pops into the little stainless finger. When throttle closes, lever hits finger, opening the disc just a tad, venting like the above mod.

Re: TRANSMISSION PAN TORQUE
I think Clark's says 6-7 ft. lbs. Remember those steel bolts go into soft aluminum. Most ft lb wrenches won't be anywhere near accurate at those small numbers. An inch-pound wrench is a Corvair owners friend. Multiply foot pounds by 12 to get inch pounds. So, 72-84 inch pounds and you are set to go ...

Re: 64 Corvair caught on fire bigtime! What do I do now?
When will it ever be easier to remove the head than now? Whatever repairs cost will likely never be cheaper either. Looks like a fair amount of metal has been removed from the chamber side of the head and blown out next to a very loose spark plug. Might last a while, wouldn't bet my own money on it ...

New here, but not new by any means
Got my first ride in a Corvair in Oct, 1959. Hooked immediately. Got my first, a 1960 700 coupe, in 1965 to go with my new drivers license. Started to learn DIY mechanics the next week. They were my daily transportation for over 30 years after that. Have owned at least one of every model except ...

Re: New guy from KC asking advice
My guess on the hesitation would be (2) dwell off just a tad, or (1) worn point plate. They wear at the pivot and when the vacuum advance starts to move ( exactly the conditions you describe) instead of moving properly it just gets wierd. With dwell meter attached, move vac advance arm. Dwell should ...

8 could be used to remove the window crank/ door handle retaining clips. Sure not as easy as the cheap flat sheet metal ones.
