Re: Broken Rocker Stud

Chevy slightly changed the design of the rocker near the end of production. All stock in the replacement part warehouses eventually changed to the new style. The later design had a wider, but shorter contact face for the valve tip. I don't believe there was a change to the ratios. I always save the ...

Re: My story on the Electronic distributor

I tested each one before shipping. They should be fine. I can tell you how to test them before you install them if you are concerned. I built a cool test unit. I can test either type of dist. But it is easy for you to check in your garage.

My story on the Electronic distributor

Okay – my story on the “Stinger” distributor. Starting in the late 80’s, I started going back to the SEMA show every year. I had attended with Bill Fisher and HP Books back in the 70s, when they were supplying the ‘How to Hot Rod Corvair Engines’ book. I answered questions in the booth a bit. In the...

Re: Melting wires, simple question

Well, yes and No, Frank, on the plug gaps. I still suggest .035 on the Corvair, no matter which ignition. This is worth a read: (from the Internet) "Origins and Purpose of HEI: The GM HEI system was not initially developed as a performance ignition system. Instead, its primary purpose was to ef...

Re: Melting wires, simple question

"Almost" any coil will fire the plugs, when properly triggered. In my experience, and with a few users reminding me of electronics math, I changed my recommendation (many years ago, now) to the 3.0 Ohm coil. The higher the resistance rating - actually the total resistance of the coil energ...

Re: Melting wires, simple question

For reference. With the TSP distributor, I recommend bypassing the stock resistance wire and feeding both the coil and the distributor full battery voltage. I also recommend using ONLY a 3.0 Ohm coil with that set-up. With a battery voltage feed, you will still have plenty of spark output, and you w...

Working on the Corvair again.

Wonder of wonders, I actually did work on my Corvair today. (65 Monza 140 4-speed). This morning I drove it over to Mel's VairMart in Santa Clara, CA and put it up on his lift for a few hours. Since it had been sitting for 15 years when I got it, I had already gone through most of the systems about ...

Re: EZCARLIFT Question

On the second lift of my Corvair on the EZ Car lift -correctly lubed - my Black & Decker 3/8" HD corded drill started putting out the "Ozone" electric smell, though it didn't slow down. I decided to buy a "real" drill and found this. This sucker will rip your wrist off. Image
