Re: 1968 Monza Project

IMG_3196.JPG Went to take a picture and the oil cooler was leaking onto the floor, so I took it off. I guess the grime was the only thing holding the oil in. IMG_3197.JPG Also I forgot the skid plate. Still sitting on the table. *sigh* The distributor clamp I had doesn't fit. I don't know what car ...

I think my wife is trying to start something...

We had a baby in November and my wife said she needed a car with a proper back seat, as the Ranger is too small and her Probe's back seat is too hard to get a baby in and out of. I told her it was her car and she could get whatever she wanted. This is what she brought home: IMG_3054.JPG Amusingly, i...

Re: 1968 Monza Project

The Corvair has returned from its long, government mandated exile to our new place, where the landlord is cool with project cars. I finally got the shifter cable put in and the dash installed: IMG_3176.JPG All of the dash lights function properly, as near as I can tell. Gotta figure out how to test ...

D'oh  Well I feel stupid.

That'll teach me to post before I get my coffee in me.

Stainless is Forever

Image

Grabbed these the other day @ the junkyard. It looked striking to me to see such perfectly preserved wiper arms on such a weathered car, but then, stainless steel doesn't rust.

Edit: Fixed, thanks, azdave.

Re: That one relative...

My first vehicle was a '79 Toyota pickup that belonged to a farmer before I bought it. Those things are supposed to be legendarily indestructible, and I think the longest period of time I went without having to wrench on it was about 11 days. If it went for a whole week without breaking down I would...

That one relative...

Does every family just have that one guy that mysteriously finds a way to ruin every car he owns? For me, that guy is my father in law. It does not seem to matter how dependable of a car he gets, or how well maintained I keep it, it will break down with strange, nigh undiagnosable problems in a slow...

Re: Rust remover? Really?

Wikipedia says that molasses can act as a chelating agent to remove rust if the part is left in a bath of molasses diluted in water at a 10:1 ratio. A search of the web turns up a whole bunch of pages with instructions for this method, so I suppose it does work. I've never tried it myself, though. h...

Re: 1968 Monza Project

Got the differential mostly reassembled this weekend. I ended up fashioning a makeshift tool from a socket and an extension to get the pinion shaft seal in. All I need now to finish it up is the cover - I'll look for one @ the junkyard Friday. I also managed to get one side of the stuck bolt on the ...

Re: So the city has decided my Corvair is an "eyesore"

You're saying that a government official came on your property without your consent, or an issued warrant by a judge? He then "inspected" the property and made an "expert" decision as to its condition? What kind of a place is Abilene, TX anyways? Is that in the USA? He didn't ev...

So the city has decided my Corvair is an "eyesore"

They've decreed that I have until tomorrow to park it in the backyard. Lovely. According to the code enforcement guy you're not even allowed to keep a non-running car in a garage here because "You could open the garage door and people could see it". Not that the Corvair would fit i...

Thanks for the encouragement!

Didn't get to work on it this weekend, my wife had other plans. I'm going over there tonight, though. Hopefully I'll get something done.

Re: 1968 Monza Project

After a long hiatus (Medical bills, two cross country trips and moving pretty much tapped me out last year), I'm finally getting back to work on the car. Here's the state of things at the moment, in no particular order: The transmission is finished, AFAIK. It's cleaned & resealed, anyway. Won't ...
