id think a good way to go is get the engine you have running well or get another engine & refresh it - if it needs. get the car running & in condition so you can drive it. then you can take your time figureing out what you want & what your choices are.

efi is great but a well tuned carb engine isnt so bad either. you have a few choices if you want to go w/efi - turbo or not. here is a bolt-on way to do efi/dis with a turbo engine & still keep all of the stock turbo parts on it. http://www.american-pi.com/corvair/html ... stbed.html

Are you certain that you want to continue pursuing all of the needed 180 HP turbocharger pieces and components? You could also switch to large intake valve 140 HP heads with a 4-carburetor or center-mounted 4-barrel arrangement, or you could retain the existing heads your engine came with, and upgrade to Electronic Fuel Injection and a distributorless ignition system (DIS), and maybe a custom exhaust system (headers?). Turbocharged Corvair engines are not necessarily the most-reliable or easy to tune Corvair configuration (I melted a piston hole in mine in the early 1970s when the pressure retard device failed!) And they require strictly Premium gasoline, which will add to your operating cost. Keeping the existing heads, strong short block and turbo camshaft and upgrading to computer-controlled EFI and DIS coupled with headers and a low-restriction exhaust system should produce a reliable engine setup that is also an attention-getter, will provide good street power and should run OK on a mid-grade gasoline too! Food for thought... http://corvairefi.com/   ::-): :dontknow: You may want to contact the Corvair EFI people to discuss these options and do some cost-analysis to see which path will provide you with the best engine option to meet your needs. The Corvair EFI system will likely provide better fuel mileage too! Not sure about the cost of recovering all of the missing Turbo pieces. :banghead:

Note: 1964 110 heads need to be used with 1964 110 cylinders, or machined to fit newer cylinders.
If you are planning to clean up the mating surfaces, or if you're going with 94mm VW cylinders,
the additional machining required shouldn't be an issue, as you'll have machining to do anyway.

3878568 (I cannot make out the last digit in your photographs to confirm).
Corvair Cylinder Head Numbers 2.jpg
The correct cylinder head casting numbers for a 1965-66 164 CI 180 HP Turbocharged engine (according to the chart) would have been: 3856756, 3856762, 3878564, or 3883860.

Physical clues of a Turbo cylinder head are missing vacuum connecting tubes on each intake manifold pad. (All non-turbo engines with conventional carburetors had these tubes for the connection of a balance tube between the heads. Turbo engines did not use a balance tube). Also, the right cylinder head has an opening in the valve cover area for the turbocharger oil return tube. All non-turbo heads would not have this opening.
