62 Corvair Wagon

Post by watersrl62 »

Buying a 1962 Corvair Wagon. How hard will it be to find parts? Looks like most parts will work on various models. Just not sure about the wagon. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, a majority of parts are interchangeable but some are specific to the wagons like the doors, tailgate, rear access door to the engine, the Windshield & all glass.
The rear bumper is different as it has a indent for the license plate.
Of course there are sheet metal differences for the roof and rear body panels.
IF all those items look reasonably good, you should be OK.

For what it is worth, the Corvair Ranch in Gettysburg PA has several Wagons on hand for vehicle specific pieces.

Supposedly the vent windows are the same as the convertibles but all other glass is different.

The glass and the small frame around the glass is the same but, the assy is different because the conv is a hard top and the wagon has a sedan type frame around it.

Is your 62 Wagon a 500, 700 or Monza? Manual transmission or Powerglide? What color is it? Pretty good shape? You'll be able to find everything you need sooner or later.

As mentioned the glass and windshield concerns specifically. The windshield is about 2" taller. Not cheap to replace. $525 - $550 depending on if it is tinted or not. The rubber gasket is $175. Shipping, tax and paying someone competent to install it pushes the price close to $1,000.

Videos show the mentioned Corvair Ranch as having wagons with intact windshields and if you are local to there it likely would save you significantly. But the likelihood you will find one in a general wrecking yard or someone selling one is pretty slim. The times I've been to self serve wrecking yards over a 30 year span numbers in the hundreds. I have seen ONE wagon windshield. That was way back about 1995 and I paid all of $22 for it. It was in Fresno and I was headed to Sacramento to visit my brother. Somehow I fit it in the back of my Audi 5000 T, on the floor, and had to keep cautioning my very small children to stop swinging their feet. I made a wooden frame to hold it and told my brother that I'd get it "someday." As it was my nephew was transporting a piece of furniture for someone out of Oregon. Unbeknown to me he stopped to see my brother, put it in his truck and when I walked in the front door from vacation... there was my windshield having survived the 400 mile trip! :tu:

Thanks to everyone who replied. It is a 1962 Monza Wagon, engine currently has a 4 carb setup, power glide trans, white body, burgundy roof. It has a custom burgundy interior, custom front grill, custom brake lights. It has a white body with burgundy top. Both will be repainted once I complete rust repairs. Let the fun begin....

All the best with your project. Wagon Master, Toms73novass are a few of the wagon guys on the Forum. Tom did a rotisserie rebuild. They and others can be very helpful. I know I have gleaned a lot from them. Since you didn't mention the glass can we assume that it is all good? Also, like grandma's wanting to ogle babies we car guy all like pictures.

BTW, aftermarket glass is available for all windows except the rear hatch. (otherwise I would have replaced mine)

Good to know. I wouldn't want to toss a rusty hatch with the glass still good!
