LM's / EM's terminology?

Post by Trip »

Here is an off the wall question for some of the guru's (Brad maybe?). In other car communities usually the terminology is something like "first gen", "second gen" and so on. With Corvettes they go with a similar theme "C1", "C2" etc. with the number corresponding to the gen of the car. I understand that the fact that there are only two generations of Corvair was a factor here, but does anyone know how far back the EM/LM terminology goes and/or where it started? How about whether or not there are any other specific cars that hobbyists refer to this way to identify first vs. second generation?

I always found the EM/LM terms interesting in that they sound to outsiders less specific as if they were describing mid model-year changes, say horn slot 60's vs. later model 60's.

EM = 60 thru 64 .. early model body style. LM = 65 - 69

Born in '59. Growing up in my neck-o-the-woods, the Corvair EM and LM terms were in use long before I ever heard of someone mentioning 1st gen, 2nd gen, etc. about ANY car series. Maybe I lived a sheltered life in my early years.

LOL 64powerglide good point!

I'm wondering if someone with a full set of CORSA Newsletters, Windmill, Quarterly, and Communique's would know when the terms EM and LM first appeared in them. At the very least someone would probably be willing to look at the Newsletters and see if the terms were already in use in 69-70. I hope that someday I'll be able to acquire a full set when there are more available and fewer interested.
