Valve guide based on my limited knowledge.

Yup...valve guide. You'll need to pull the head, and might as well do both sides. Parts are cheap!

Steve is correct. Valve guide. Do both heads.

oh indeed. I already have the heads off and my shopping cart loaded at california corvairs BUT...... I've got a line on a motor and tranny for $250. Rather than doing any machining, I thought I would pick that up and start with those heads. OR just use that whole motor since its together. Decisions decisions.

I questioned the bore because I know the valve guides are brass and these are magnetic so not brass. hmmmmm.

Also, one pushrod is mangled, there are 2 different kinds of lifters in each bank. Somebody was in there and didn't know what they were doing. Caused a cascade malfunction.

There are too many people in this world who should never be allowed near a tool! I tore down an engine last year with a missing top piston ring, mis-matched lifters and push rods, badly bent push rod tubes, and gasket sealer everywhere. Early cylinders, pistons and rods, late cam, early crank, late case, and two very different heads - one side turbo, the other, not sure...haven't looked it up, but non-turbo. The poor engine was in the process of self-destruction! But hey, it was cheap, and the case was good!

My favorite was a "set" of cases where the two halves came from different engines. The main bearing diameters were noticeably different just by fingering the transition.
