I had asked a question previously about the choke on the right bank being pushed rather than pulled. Problem solved as per the recommendations, let it warm up - solved the issue. Now another issue. I replaced the gas tank - it was full of dried gas that came out in large chunks!!! New fuel sending unit, blew out all the lines, put a filter in line, changed the filter stones in the carbs, new plugs gapped to .35. I do have spark, the timing is right on, I have a pertronix 1. Once I get it started, it idles well however, the initial start is the problem. It takes a shot of starting fluid to get her started from cold. Once it warms up she'll start without any problems. I have not yet completely rebuilt carbs. Not sure if its a weak spark that need the highly volatile starting spray, or is it a fuel issue. When I pull the plugs, they are wet, so I am leaning toward a spark issue.
Suggestions?

Re: Starting question
Hello,
I like to start with the basics, did you do a compression test?
So even with starting fuild it is hard to start? That makes me think you have low compression until you get the block warmed up. Just my first guess.

Re: Starting question
No compression done but no, it starts right up with the shot of starting fluid. All cylinders looks the same when looking at the plugs. All of them are wet

Re: Starting question
Okay I miss read you, so when it is cold before you start, if you work the throttle do you see gas getting squirted down the barrel? If you do, it must be the choke settings,
One pump of the throttle should set the choke and the fast idle when it is cold.

Re: Starting question
A pump of the throttle should squirt gas into the venturi. A visual test, air filters off, choke plate held open, move throttle and a squirt should be visible from each primary carburetor.
If not, probably the starting issue noted.

Re: Starting question
Well, I avoided rebuilding the carbs as long as I could. I don't know why I thought it was going to be more difficult than it was. When I took the Left one off, and opened it, it was full of dried gas residue . The accelerator plunger was missing the cup and the little brass plungers were stuck. Cleaned everything up, replaced accelerator pump, and float needle and seat and all gaskets and started on right side. It had a slightly different accelerator plunger, in a little better shape. Same junk on bowls , the brass plungers were not stuck. Replaced everything same as left side, replaced the pcv junctions at the base of each carb -they were rock hard and swollen. buttoned everything up and once the bowls were full, she started right up.
