Help with breather tube oil leak 1960 model 700

Post by queenbee »

After trying to find out why I had excessive oil on the right side of the engine, I found the oil breather tub going into the block was broken. I have attacehd some photos. Anyone have ideas on how to remove the piece from the block? And where to get a new tube?

Thanks,

Not knowing what kind of tools or experience you have it's hard to say but I would start with a screw in type easy-out using some upward pressure as I turned it or --

A hook type tool might pull it out , you might be able to make a tool from old screwdriver or ?

A small slide hammer might work if you can get it to grab the tube,

Never worked on an early but what about removing the valve cover and driving it out from the inside with a punch ?

Hmmmm.....am I going crazy, or is that hole right there in the picture just one of the threaded holes on the head to hold the top fan shroud on? I know '60's are a completely different animal, but doesn't that pipe still just slide into passenger side of the top fan bearing/crankcase cover like all the other years? I know the pipe goes straight down like the old school "road draft tubes" of pre-63 cars.

Remember --- I don't do earlies ::-):

In this pic it looks like it may be the heat supply to the choke -- If 60s even had an auto choke ???

But yeah - it does look like a shroud bolt hole :dontknow:

It is the heat tube to the Choke and it feeds through the hole down to the exhaust manifold to the rt rear of the engine and another tube feeds back up to a rubber line that goes to the air cleaner.

Zoom into the upper right of the attached photo next to the rag stuffed into the carb inlet to see the hole on my '60 that I am pulling down for a re-ring job...

I have attached a photo with red circle high lighting the area. This may be the choke tube. It was split around the base, and we are now blowing oil.

Thanks,

Okay, I think now I get it. It's actually NOT the breather, but the choke hot air supply. (?) At any rate, by looking at that pic, I would say it's NOT leaking oil from there! It sure doesn't look like it to me; it appears rather dry. Might have to run the engine and see where else it may be leaking. There's plenty of places to look on a corvair. Spraying some of the oily areas down with carb cleaner first will definitely help, like.....

Thanks Flat 6,

We have been cleaning as we go. That might explain no oil. We are getting a pretty good amount of oil, it pools up especially at the base of the right side carb. I am also searching for the PCV valve, to see if it works. Trying to figure why we get some much oil in that are. After abbout a 5 mile drive there is a lot of oil near the carb. At first we thought it was pushing out thru the dipstick tube.

Thanks to all for their thoughts.

Again - I don't do Earlies , but I think that the 1960 only had a road draft tube and not a PCV ? Even most of the newer Vairs didn't have an actual valve but used a fixed orifice instead.

Your engine may have more blowby than the draft tube can relieve.

Another thought on the leak. If there is a leak in the top cover area the cooling fan will push the oil outward and blow it out under the top shroud on to the head.

If you remove the oil fill cap with it running do you get a lot of pressure and or smoke coming out.

STP ?

Here's another pic-

Why don't you just plug the hole and see if the oil leak stops ?
