1963 Corvair fold down seat operation help needed

Post by N8 »

Does the fold down rear seat back in a 63 coupe need to be manually unlocked to go up and down or do you just force it? I could not get mine to operate so I took it apart to clean, touch up paint, and lube. Both latches work ok and are not damaged as far as I can tell, but I don't see how they would be unlocked once in the locked position because there is not a linkage that would unlock both at the same time. Am I missing a part or missing the point? Any help is appreciated.

Is it a Monza? They all didn't have the fold down seat (although I think the Monzas did). I don't recall a latch mechanism. Dennis

Except for '60 and '68-9, I don't think there were latches, just a spring clip.

A quick review of the 63 owners manual, page 20, confirms this.

Maybe someone put a '60 rear seat in your car. I do recall the seat latch in my '60 was a total pain.

Wagons also got rear seat back latches. :guitar:

I wish they put them on the drivers side not the passengers side.

I think it was on the passenger side because the doors have to be open. The driver gets out opens the driver's side rear door, opens the passenger side rear door, folds down the seat, closes the passenger rear door, closes the driver's side rear door done. If the latch was on the passenger side it would mess up the sequence. I guess if you have no rear door armrests then it would make sense to have the latch on the driver's side.

Joel, good point. Forgot about the arm rests. :banghead:

Here is a link to some photos of what I have:

It is out of a63' spyder coupe.

What I have doesn't look like what is pictured in the manual link above. It is very hard to unlatch with a screwdriver.
