Removing Torsion Bars For Trunk
Removing Torsion Bars For Trunk
I need to clean the area under the torsion bars for the trunk.
Is there a lot of pressure on the bars?
Do I need to do anything special to avoid problems.

Re: Removing Torsion Bars For Trunk
There is a fair amount of pressure on the bars. You didn't say for an early or late as they are a bit different but similar. You have to hold the lid all the way up as this relieves some of the tension.
On the early they are somewhat exposed and I think I used a 1/2" piece of pipe.
I've done the lates but it has been a long time since I have had to get in there so I can't tell you about it.
Keep in mind that the lid gets pretty heavy and if you are not careful the rods can bite you!

Re: Removing Torsion Bars For Trunk
Yes, a lot of pressure. Enough pressure to push up on the lid from a very short lever arm.
Procedure in shop manual.
Here is early, you did not state what car you are working on:
FRONT COMPARTMENT LID TORQUE RODS
Removal
1. Open front compartment lid.
2. Prop lid in extreme up position.
3. Place end of large screwdriver or other suitable
tool at base of torque rod retainer immediately
behind tabs shown in Figure 10-15. Insert block of
wood, the approximate width of retainer opening,
between shaft of screwdriver and ends of both
torque rods immediately below torque rod attaching
pin; then carefully pry block rearward to take
tension of torque rods off pin and remove pin.
NOTE: Mark pin retaining hole prior to removal
of pin to insure rods are installed in same
position.
CAUTION: Exercise care when releasing tension
from rods after removal of pin as torque rods
may be under considerable tension.
4. Disengage each torque rod from movable portion
of affected hinge and remove rods.
If you do not have a shop manual, you can look at early or late online at the corvanics website. But I suggest you buy the proper one because the online pictures are poor.

Re: Removing Torsion Bars For Trunk
It on a 65.
Looks like I need a lot of planning. I thought I could remove the screws that hold the rods but that does not appear to be the case.
Thanks for the help. Larry

Re: Removing Torsion Bars For Trunk
Well I did it. Not exactly how the manual described it but worked well and safely. I also figured out how to put them back on.
Larry thanks for the help.
