Main Harness Connector body Terminal removal engine side

Post by dryenko »

Per title . Has been years.
Removing excess wires from the rear engine bay electrical harness.
On my Crown V8 resurrection.
Since I don't need all the functions.
With the engine in the back seat area.
Did it years ago, but y'all know how memory works.
Need a refresher course on getting the engine side wire and connectors out
It appears as if the whole square part including the tab for the connection comes out as one piece.
The body side seems different.

I can't remember either but it seems like those were the funky square ones that are the same on both sides?

I will take a look. Keeping wires for tail lights, license plate light , and anything needed to use items the Corsa Instrument panel.
Like ignition +12 to turn MSD on, oil pressure light and Alternator warning.
Those wires will be routed back forward to the engine area.
FYI :
Car and Harness is for a 1965 Monza, so new wire will be needed for the Corsa tach [ from MSD ] .
Separate gauges for engine H2O temp and oil pressure will be used in a radio blank off panel.

The rectangular connector on each side of the harness at the engine and body use twin lock terminLs. The locks are on each side of each terminal.. hence the name twin lock connector

I published a big discussion on the other forum about Packard Series 56 connectors. The info on this and this connector is included. You might be ahead to get a square 8 pin Packard terminal or other connector you like to replace the stock connector. Then just cut wires close to connector harness to remove old connector..

Those are Packard "Twin-Lock" terminals, and yes, the same terminal on both sides of the connector so they're unisex.

As the name implies, there are two locking tabs and they're on opposite sides. The release tool consists of two parallel blades that simultaneously release both tabs. For a one-time deal you could use two very small jeweler's screwdrivers.

It is a little hard to tell, with these old eyes.
Does the tool go in from the wire side, or the connector side ?
Thanks again !

The release tool goes in from the terminal side and release allows the terminal and wire to come out on the wire side. The idea is to push-in the little wings sticking out on each side of the terminal. With the wings pushed in, the terminal & wire will slide out the wire-side of the connector.

The Corvair primarily uses the Packard 56 and Packard "Twin Lock". Both have "barb(s)" that requires the tool to fit in from the contact side, NOT the wire side. You pull on the wire AFTER inserting the tools to remove the contact from the socket.

HOWEVER, it is possible to bend the barb so it will jamb the contact making removal difficult. I usually PUSH the wire into the connector because this takes the pressure off the barb(s) and then push in the tool. Next you pull on the wire to pull it and the contact out of the plastic socket.

You need a good light (and magnifying glasses if you are my age - LOL) to see where the tool blade(s) fit into the plastic socket at the contact. Once you figure it out it goes easily.

If you are doing a number of different connectors, then Lisle makes a kit with the different removers #5770. See https://www.lislecorp.com/specialty-too ... l-tool-kit
