Late Model Heater Rebuild Start to Finish.

Back in October of 2018 I went through the Heater Box for my '65 Monza coupe as it had been sitting for over 30 years and yes, mice apparently got into it at some point.

Once the assembly was out of the car, I made the effort to take photo's of it from all sides so I would know how things were assembled and adjusted in order to insure it went back together the same way....The photo's did help with reassembly.

Your '66 and later heater box will be slightly different but probably close enough.

With that set screw you probably didn't need to use a spacer and not on the end of the shaft. Lots of electric motor connections to belt pulleys, squirrel cage fans etc. in industry are with just a set screw. But.... belt and suspenders usually not a bad route!

Makes me wonder what they have built inside mine, as they took string and dragged it into the ductwork. Maybe the mice are doing macramé?

You did a great job on that heater unit. I've done two 66 units.

Here is a picture of the 66 style top of housing. You can see how they eliminated the incorrect "fresh air intake" which was the result of a BIG engineering goof!!! This is what happens when water cooled engine folks design an air cooled engine heater . Since the heat ducts contain engine fan pressurized hot air, you have to balance it with cool pressurized air from the top of the engine shroud to mix the air via the controller. They fixed the design and just added a cap to the useless "fresh air intake". Not sure when, but it has been said the corrected design was installed sometime during the 65 model year run.
