The image below is from the attached 1965 Corvair Assembly Manual - CARBURETOR & FUEL SYSTEM
Automatic Choke Adjustment.jpg
Also covered in the 1965 Corvair Chassis Shop Manual - SECTION 6 - ENGINE TUNE-UP section (attached). Starting on page 8 of the attached DELCO ROCHESTER - Models H, HV Carburetor Service Manual you will find a detailed description of the automatic choke system.

When the engine is warm, the choke is fully disengaged and wide open. When cold, the bimetallic choke coils are fully relaxed and applying tension to the carburetor choke mechanism. However, the choke butterfly cannot close because the fast idle cam on the side of each carburetor is blocked by the throttle linkage (unloader arm). By pressing the gas pedal once prior to a cold starting attempt, you move the throttle tang out of the way and allow the chokes to set in the closed position, to aid the car with starting. You should check this action by examining the choke settings to ensure that both choke actuation rods are properly adjusted, and that each choke butterfly snaps closed when you manually open the throttle on a cold engine.
