What have you found in your Corvair?

Post by Edz »

I'm curious as to what others have found in their Corvair when it was 1st new to you? This could be just from simple cleaning or as you were taking things apart to rebuild/restore it. Bugs, spiders, dust and dirt do not count!

So far:
Ice scraper
Flat head screw driver
Gemco life time membership card
Two temporary insurance cards from 1992
A bus schedule and map from 1990
A receipt from the last el-cheapo paint job in 1991 ($201.20) Earl Scheib
A strange red pipe (not the smoking type) :neener:
Extra ignition switch (my keys do not match it)
Best of all so far a quarter from 1965.
No stock parts were harmed during the on going restoration of this Corvair....ok, maybe a little bit.

How bout a empty pack of Lucky Strike Cigs with a safe way book of matches and a Apple fruit pie wrapper stuffed into the cab of the rampy behind the Dome light, seems a factory worker found a nice trash can after break!

2. Protect-o-plate in original paper folder.
3. Receipt for 8 gallons of Gulf no-nox @ 32.9 cents a gallon.

I found original papers from the bank for the first owner dated Nov. 5, 1963. Price 2,708.30.
Several service & parts receipts.
One small plastic bottle with some marijuana in it.
Green stamps, a note book keeping track of mileage & gas, they were getting a little over 18 mpg. Also in the note book was a notation for push rod O-Rings & a valve job at 45,000 miles.
Receipt for a new muffler & 2 hangers in 1972, $21.96 installed.
Receipt for 6 new spark plugs from 1969 $4.44 plus .18 tax $4.62, AC 44FF
Receipt for a set of brake shoes in 1985, $15.60.
Most of the receipts were from different owners. As far as I can tell from insurance papers & registrations i'm the 5th owner.
The 4th owner bought the car but just put it in his garage, & the 3rd owner told the 4th owner he parked it in 1989 with just over 48,000 miles, it now just passed 50,000 miles.

Well, you asked.......I found a dead rat in one of my old EMs. Hence, the car's name "rat-mobile". :guitar:

I have found a lot of things in old Corvairs. Old coins, build sheets, match books, dead animals, snake skins, live rodents and snakes, even a crack pipe.
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.
Currently working full time repairing Corvairs and restoring old cars.

when I first cleaned out my corvair, I ran into this pack of Malboros, matchbox from the Plantation Inn , a rusted out fountain pen under the seats. Glovebox had receipts and annual vehicle inspection reports from the 1980s. The maps are probably from the 70s - motor oil were still sold in cans!

I can not recall where I put the pipe...I'm thinking now it might be the handle for the jack.

Edz that looks like an original Vlchek screwdriver from the original GM accessory tool kit. Very rare...been searching for a set for a while. Complete they included two screwdrivers, one flat and one phillips.

Was it half smoked when you found it, or after? ::-):

The only markings I'm able to see on the screw driver are "MADE IN USA", within one of the groves. If it is as you say COOL, it is actually a pretty good screw driver and I have used it a few times already. I did not have one in that size, so it was a great find for me. :tu:

Davemotorhead, what you found btw is AWESOME! Not that the others stuff is not but, finding hidden worker trash.... :rolling:

Found these items in the glove box of my 67 parts car, I think the comb and ice scrapper were standard equipment in 67 :rolling:
