FC Coil Spring Question

Post by 61_Shasta »

As mentioned earlier, the first step in getting our FC driveable is curing a horribly bad lowering job in which the previous owner cut at least two, probably three of the coils out of the springs to drop the body down to about 3"-4" off of the ground. Obviously this has made the van essentially undriveable due to the ride stiffness, bouncing and lack of ground clearance. I was going to take it out of my driveway one day even though I knew I could only drive it about a block or so but a friend warned me that I was going to rip the muffler off if I did.

I was told by multiple members of the local Corvair club that when replacing springs on the back of the FC, they recommended using the front springs from a 1968 V8 Mustang rather than the replacement Corvair springs. They indicated that the Mustang springs are superior in performance and fit the Corvair without any need for modification. They also mentioned that the Ford springs are a bit stiffer and maintain proper ride height better than the replacement Corvair springs.

Any opinions on this?

 I've never heard of the Ford Mustang option for a Corvair, but here is another custom spring source that was recommended here on the Forum in the past. Their abilities and experience with building springs for classic cars may prove to be useful to you...

Here is the best info I have on replacement springs...
