Converting from a 95hp to 150hp turbo

Post by Jonathan's61vair »

Just wondering for future reference. What would I have to do with my 95hp engine to convert it to a turbo; And with that how much should I put away to be able to spend in the future :ty:

Might be easier and less stressful to just find a turbo engine and install it. Keep the 95 in case you ever wanted to put it back or if you sold the car to a purist

If the 95 is in good shape you could put a stock turbo system on it, but I suspect you'd spend about as much as a whole engine by the time you're done. Best to just find one to rehab, and that way you have all the correct parts instead of a mix of stuff.

 SOMETHING TO CONSIDER...

You might also consider upgrading to a high performance normally aspirated engine, such as a 140 hp 164 CI powerplant. You cannot ignore the cost of fuel, as this can put a significant dent in your monthly budget. A turbocharged Corvair engine will demand expensive high-octane Premium fuel — anything less will destroy your turbocharged engine. Your reward for feeding your engine Premium fuel is poor gas mileage — even if you drive with a light foot. If you get on the boost frequently you will also be paying frequent visits to the gas station to refuel.

Since the turbo engines are less common, their cost is usually higher. The 140 hp engines were offered in Corsas from 1965-1966, and in other Corvairs from 1965-1969. This improves their availability and can help to lower the cost to purchase one.

I have been driving Corvairs with 140 hp engines since 1969. I have found that the engine will often produce about 22-24 mpg on the highway, and when the car is lightly loaded in cool to moderate temperatures it will tolerate a mid-grade or Regular gasoline. In the summer, climbing long hills or with a full load of passengers a higher octane fuel may be needed to avoid pinging and detonation.

The 140 hp engine is a little easier to tune and maintain, and provides good performance, good reliability, and reasonable cost of operation. You may find that such a compromise will suit you better if you intend to use your Corvair as a daily driver.

Here is an "ultimate" 180 hp turbo powertrain rebuild offer on eBay. The builder says he has over $13,000 in this powertrain. Bidding starts at $6000, but that won't meet his reserve or his expectations...

I'm in the middle of converting for 102hp to 150hp turbo. There's a lot probably 3000 plus to build, first your going to need are turbo heads, forged crank forged pistons, turbo cam or new cam, turbo charger, intake tube, side draft carburetor, turbo exhaust with inlet and out exhaust pcs all necessary fuel lines incidental turbo hook up pieces.Plus a few other things a haven't thought of because there always is. If you're going to go through all that you may as well build up performance and go all the way.

If you decide to build the turbo motor, I have a set of 150hp turbo heads that I could sell you. I'm not doing anything with them.
