early 60's

at some point I may get a 'real' Corvair to go along with my mutant.

I just hit 40 this month and this was my 1st Corvair and sort of a birthday present (along with my Ibanez JS100 guitar) I love the classics but just haven't had the opportunity to own one til now. Now that I have one, there's no turning back. While I was active in the local Subaru scene, I was one of the oldest. This is definitely a change to be on the younger end of the spectrum.

I think you will find that driving a classic Corvair tends to attract more attention than driving a Subaru. Corvairs seem to draw interest at every gas station, movie theater, grocery store, rest stop and restaurant parking lot! I even receive comments and thumbs up at stop lights while waiting for the red light to change. I know it's not me — it has to be the Corvair! ::-):

There is a whole new generation of Corvair enthusiasts and owners developing out there. Even teen-agers are discovering Corvairs, and fathers are buying them as father/son and father/daughter restoration projects that turn into the teen's first car — and many of them love it! They often get more attention driving a classic Corvair than the would in a brand-new Corvette!

The kids at church are fascinated with the Corvair. If one asks to see the engine a whole crowd will develop around the car when I open the engine compartment! I even get attention and offers of assistance if I open the trunk. They think I have an engine problem! When I stopped at a base gas station in Germany with my 1965 Corsa convertible a young teen approached and wanted to know what kind of car it was (in 1982). He thought it was some kind of Italian sports car that he had never seen before.

Recently at a gas station in Georgia I was approached by a middle-aged woman, who asked me "...is that a Corvair???" She was very excited and pleased when I confirmed her suspicions. "I thought so!" she said. "My GRANDMOTHER used to drive one!" :whoa: :sad5: ...I just felt old.

I totally agree. While Subarus are fun to drive, you can't beat the look and feel of a classic. You can see from the pics the condition of the car. Its far from a show car (at this point) but driving it home after buying it, I had 2 people give me thumbs up on the car. They are definitely a looker... in any condition

Haha. You got that right. My corvair brings the interest of the Subaru crowd because I painted it with Subaru color codes
And I want to say that I am one of the few under 30 owners.

I'm proud to say I'm part of the young generation that loves Corvairs at 21. Some of you may recognize me from Corvaircenter, as I usually am just a lurker here. Here's my '65. I just did an overhaul on the engine this past summer after a bad compression ring problem, my first internal engine work, and it's running stronger than it has since I've had it, thanks to the help of some forum members.

I was actually surprised to see the poll results. It's reassuring to see younger people interested in these cars. One of the reasons, I'm sure, is that they are still affordable but classy "classic" cars. I have other Chevrolet classics but they tend to be too expensive for younger people to get into as a hobby or beginner car because of the "investment and collector" status.

I just took my 64 Spyder into town today to get my tags. Even in the little town I live in, I got several "Wow, I haven't seen one of those for years..." type comments!
By the way, I'm 60 and this is my second Corvair. The first one was a 65 or 66 coupe I owned years ago.
Also, as a side comment, today is the 50th anniversary of my 64 being delivered to it's first owner! The warranty book was filled out on Dec. 13, 1963!!

I'm 65 and bought my first corvair a 63 coupe last summer. I bought it on a wim as it looked like one my grandfather had bought new in 1963. [same color ] I at that time thought it was pretty cool but really didn't have any interest in that type of car. I was and still am into muscle cars, but as I say that I have just purchased a 69 corvair convertible , not a muscle car by any means.

Just for fun, how many of you kids in the upper echelons of the age groups remember this commercial from your youth?

Nostalgia time! ::-):  Perhaps some of you took some Corvair pictures with this camera!!!

I bought this camera around 1965 at a department store called Bay Mart in San Jose, California. We brought it home in our 1965 Corvair Corsa convertible! Had a lot of fun with that plastic camera too! (My other camera was a Zeiss Ikon folding camera with a bellows that used 120 roll film. I had fun with that camera too, and my father taught me how to develop and print my own film.

All of these nice young people in the 1965 commercial are in their late-sixties to mid seventies now. :whoa:

By the way, some of you might recognize the girl in the commercial with the long black hair. That was Ali MacGraw, who later starred in the movie Love Story and married actor Steve McQueen. She is now 74 years old!
