Corvair Security
I wanted to get some inexpensive ideas to protect my car. I was thinking of a kill switch off the negative side of the coil. I would also like to lock the engine lid.

I have hidden a kill switch in the rear cowl area cutting the ignition feed to the engine compartment in the rear of the main body harness. A couple fairly knowledgeable Corvair guys spent a few hours trying to figure out why no ignition power. Then some one recalled that the car might have a kill switch....even then they did not find it (they would have had they had a lift I think). I told them the location when they called me after someone suggested that I had installed it.
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.

Mine has an electric fuel pump kill switch. Only problem, have to remember when it was turned off!!!!!

If I tell you exactly what I've done it wouldn't be a secret.
The best protection is stopping the car from being able to roll so think of hidden ways to block the E-brake from being released.
Next is to disable the fuel system. If you have an electric fuel pump you know what to do but hide your work well. With a mechanical fuel pump, hide a manual shut-off valve somewhere in the main line. They will only drive a short distance until the fuel bowls are empty if you can kill the fuel supply.
Killing the ignition is easily bypassed by a serious thief but it does thwart the rookies. In one of the old Corsa Tech Topics there is article about drilling a small hole in the LM engine cover latch levers so that a small pin or cut off nail can be inserted to block the lever from moving fully. Most Corvair owners I share that with never see the pin there even when they look. My dad used that trick back in the 70's when kids were stealing his batteries.

All kidding aside, if someone wants to steal from you, they will. It sucks, but it's a fact. Best thing might be to put a boot on it like the police use or park it inside. I have thought seriously about a removable steering wheel like the Honda kids use, but I like my original steering wheel.
I should add, local to me are a lot of Hondas that have expensive engine swaps and whatnot. They tell me that the thieves themselves say the removable steering wheel is the best way, second is a boot.

HAVE. A GOOD. FRIEND WITH A CORSA.HIS DAUGHTER WORKED AT MAGIC MOUNTAIN IN SANTA CLARITA AND DROVE THE CAR EVERYDAY. SHE WOULD PUT A LOCKABLE CAR COVER ON IT BEFORE GOING IN. ONE DAY SHE CAME. OUT TO FIND THE CAR COVER CUT BUT. THE CAR WAS STILL THEIR WITH A NOTE. SAYING NEXT. TIME ONLY. THING SAVED IT WAS THE REMOVABLE STERLING WHEEL SHE PUT IN THE TRUNK LOL JOE

Yes, but most times they will move on to an easier target if you just do a few simple things to slow them down. If someone figures out how to get my Corvair started they still won't be able to get it to roll.lostboy wrote:All kidding aside, if someone wants to steal from you, they will.
Overall, I worry more about someone stealing my 87 B2000 pickup than I do my Corvairs.
