ENGINE SWAP

Post by wolvercote »

Am BRAND NEW to corvairs. What is involved in installing a 64 turbo engine in a 62, 900. Would it be a straight exchange or is there more to it. Would like to know everything involved. Thanks

Its "pretty much" a straight swap. Are you swapping transmissions too?

Also, do you have EVERYTHING from the donor car??......you might be needing some of the little stuff....you know, linkages and the like.....

Turbo engines have return lines for the fuel...

Complete wiring harness is slightly different, if you want to use the Spyder dash. Fuel return line should be run, factory uses a 'T' in the vent line to the fuel tank for the return line to dump fuel back into the tank. Cut-out for the exhaust or re-route. Definately not an impossible swap. :tu:

Thanks to everyone for the info. The 62 is a spyder clone, badges, dash etc. Will have to check if correct wiring was installed for the spyder dash. Trans was not going to be changed, was going to use trans already in the 62. Their is no donor car. Friend has a 64 turbo engine that has been rebuilt and I was thinking of installing that into the 62. What linkage might have to be changed? Don't know anything about corvairs. Still have 63 Impala SS that I bought brand new. It is in like new condition.

I pretty much meant the whole shebang that goes from the intake manifold to the carb. But as was mentioned, that fuel return line might be the only "bitch" part of it.....I imagine it's used to keep the fuel from getting too hot as well as keeping the pressure to the carb down a bit, so it's probably a "must have".

And if you are going to use the Spyder dash, you'll need a hard plastic vacuum line for the guage.

You can do without the fuel return, but it involves an electric pump and a regulator.

Hmmm Some data I do not see here. Is the 62 a stick (4 speed prefered) or an automatic? (never offered with a turbo and likely not a good choice). If that was a silly question I am sorry but I had to ask. The clutch and stick shift linkages have no relation to the engine and will function as is.

The accelerator rod from the lever at the trans to the engine (carb) is a different piece on the turbo. A number of pieces of the turbo engine sheet metal are different from the non turbo engine. If the turbo engine is complete with all its aircleaner pieces and shrouding you should have no problems.

With a little electric know how and the standard and spyder wiring diagrams it is not to hard to complete the standard wiring harness to turbo standards if needed.

You have an issue if you try to use the 62 trans in a 64 motor. The splines are different.
That's why I asked if you were swapping tranny's earlier.

You need to use the input shaft from the 62 is all.
