NG seats question

Post by 65Coupe »

I've read all about the Sebring and after market racing seat swaps, but I was wondering if anyone has tried to mount any modern Euro seats in their Vair. There are quite a few Audi, Volvo, Mercedez, etc., seats out there that aside from being really comfortable, have a great look that goes with the sleek design of the Corvair. I know people have posted about Honda, Mazda, Pontiac and some others, but I was interested in stock Euro seats. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Almost any seat that fits the space available can be made to fit in our cars. Some are easier than others due to the way the brackets on the seat are configured allowing for less modifications to seat and floorpan for good mounting. Every non-stock seat I have installed requires fabrication of brackets and usually modification of seat tracks in order to nicely mount. Some can be mounted to modified Corvair seat tracks, on others it is easier to fabricate brackets on the seats native tracks and perhaps fabricate new mounting nuts into the floorpan for a solid (safe) clean looking install. I have used a couple different Honda seats, as well as Chrysler Laser buckets. Helped a buddy put power Lexus LS400 buckets in his. All took some fabrication of brackets. All required some floorpan modification not extensive.

I'd love to see the Lexus seats installed if you have any images. I'm going back and forth about swapping out the seats or just having the stock seats rebuilt and reupholstered. I love the look of the stock buckets, but the modern seats are so much more comfortable for longer drives.

The LS400 seats were really too big. Very little gap between them. I have no pics. I really like early 90's Civic seats (single side post headrests). Not too bad to fit, sit good and look good I think. I have a side rear pic here http://www.tedsautobodyinc.com/serv03.htm. Check out the old chrysler/dodge laser seats here (toward the bottom right column with console) http://www.tedsautobodyinc.com/corvair_repair.htm

Jim on CCF has Acura RSX seats, very clean install, and apparently bolts right in to existing holes.
