Stripped Carb Stud Bolt

Post by lalkie »

I have a 67 Monza and pulled the carb of to clean it and found the inside stud was loose and I was unable to tighten it. While inspecting it I found the stud had been glued in. There is a hole when the stud goes that measured .505 that had been filled in with glue and a smaller hole in the bottom that was not centered in the larger hole. This appears to have been repaired by a previous owner. Is the .505 hole standard with a 5/16-18 stud threaded in the bottom of the hole? What would be the purpose of doing this as opposed to just treading the 5/16 stud in the top of the head like the outside long stud? I repaired the stud by threading the hole 9/16-18 and gluing a 9/16 plug in with a 5/16 threaded hole for the stud. Has anyone repaired a stripped stud in the same way? Thanks Larry

According to Clark's Corvair Parts, 5/16" heli-coil or time-serts should do the job...

Yes the large hole with the smaller 5/16 hole in the bottom is normal. Heli-coil the small hole and install the stud.

The helcoil would be fine except the stud was recessed in the .505 hole. I needed something to bring the .505 hole to a reasonable size. I did not want to drill any deeper into the head. the stud that I took out was about .250 recessed at the bottom of the .505 hole. I have another 110 motor and it has the same large hole but not stud in it and I cant get a good look in the bottom of the larger hole. thanks for the reply Larry

You should be able to drill and tap the smaller 5/16 hole to accept the 5/16 helicoil with no problem.
