steering gear box lubrication ?
steering gear box lubrication ?
While looking under my 66 tonight I noticed a very small weeping leak coming from the steering gear . Nothing major , but I do not like it . I had never thought about it before ...but what kind of lubrication is in the steering box and how is it replaced or topped off. I figure after all these years it probably has never been changed or topped off. Is it like a normal cars rear end where you remove a plug and top off the gear lube. Somebody must have done this before , any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: steering gear box lubrication ?
I have attached a copy of this portion of the Shop Manual.1965 Corvair Chassis Shop Manual, Section 9 wrote:LUBRICATION
The steering gear is filled at the factory with a special all-season gear lubricant. Seasonal change is unnecessary and the housing should not be drained. Lubricant level should be checked every 36,000 miles. When required, add water resistant E.P. lubricant. Refer to Lubrication, Section 2, for lube points and intervals.

Re: steering gear box lubrication ?
I used this:http://www.greenpartstore.com/John-Deer ... 02562.html
Same as what I use in the manual Ross steering box in my '56 Willys.
About $4 a tube, fills all the voids in the box and won't cavitate and form voids either.
Remember "nothing runs like a Deere"
