corvair alignment instructions?

Post by Trip »

I read in one of my books ("How to Keep your Corvair Alive" I think) that there is a booklet or set of instructions on how to do your own alignment at home. Can anyone direct me to or send me these instructions? I've got three Vairs in need of alignment (2 lates and 1 early).

Thanks!

"Corvair Wheel Alignment" By Fred Johnson. Corvair Underground & Clark's both have it.

Fred Johnson's booklet is pretty good, it explains the basics of alignment very well, and gives instructions on building some simple sheet metal tools to do the alignment yourself. Years ago I purchased the booklet, and built the tools. IMO the camber gauge works well but the caster gauge is difficult to use. After doing a few alignments, I decided to upgrade and bought a high quality gauge from Longacre Racing: http://www.longacreracing.com/catalog/i ... 29&catid=5 These are available from various vendors for about $120.

This tool makes it much easier, faster, and more accurate to do camber and caster adjustments. Toe measurements are done with a couple of carpenter framing squares clamped to a piece of angle iron. Accurate alignments are easily done, equal to a professional shop doing the work. You can get alignment specs for different driving modes on Bryan Blackwell's pages here: http://autoxer.skiblack.com/setup.html

thanks, I had checked Clarks the other night and somehow missed it, I did however make a list of books they have that I do need =P

Based on your advice maybe I'll start saving up for the tool you showed, though I have an awful long list of things to save up for at the moment! Missy just got hired for a part time job about 5 minutes ago, that should be a big help!
