Should it be Turbo Charged or Not???
Hi,
I'm brand new to the group and new to owning anything corvair, though it's been a fond wish of mine for many years.
Anyways, I bought a Convertible from a guy out in the Delta (Stockton, CA area). I fell madly in love with it and want to put it all back to factory original.
Here's my issue... it's a 64 & Turbo Charged… according to the VIN it’s a 900, everything I’ve seen tells me the Spyder (which is the 600 series in 64) is the ONLY turbo charged model… so what do I have here?
Any help would be great!!!
I’ll post pics later when I find the right thread for them.

Re: Should it be Turbo Charged or Not???
You are correct the (600 series) Spyder was the only turbo charged model available in 1964. The Monza (900 series) was never turbo charged.

Since you are new to Corvairs, I suggest you keep the turbo and just drive it. You may really enjoy it like it is. Later when you become familiar with the car you can do whatever. Besides, many EMs have been "Spyderized". Also, since you obviously don't have the stock engine you should try to figure out if it's a 150HP or 180HP. My 2¢

OH!!! You are SO thinking like me there...
Right now I'm just collecting information and learning, but thanks for your 2 cents I really appreciate any and all suggestions from those more knowledgeable…
Since you mentioned it and your standing in front of that awesome lookin Van I bought a pair of Corvair 95s one was delivered the other day, came with a 110HP motor with 140 HP heads, since I said I wanted stock she threw in the 140 HP motor with the original 110 HP heads and a spare auto trans (also a spare RampSide door, to engine lids for my 64, and a bunch of extras in the cab of the truck).
Pictures to come…

Cool! Absolutely keep that Turbo. Wish I had one to put together. It's definitely not from that year car but it's cool anyway. Well I can't say that for sure but the fan and the alternator are from a LM (65-69)

Re: Should it be Turbo Charged or Not???
Might want to check your block number in order to increase your odds that it is a turbo motor with the hardened crank and not just a turbo placed on a standard engine. "RL" for LM blocks, "YR" for EM blocks. Just a place to start. 140 engines had hardened cranks too. If it turns out to be a 180 engine your gonna' like that just fine! Welcome!
