over spray on vinyl interior

Post by Jerry Whitt »

Being in a hurry sometimes gets you in trouble. Did not properly protect some black vinyl of the interior of my
Corsa. Any suggestions for removing a gray primer from black vinyl seats?

Thanks in advance for any your ideas!!

Only way I know to remove paints from vinyl is with solvents. Catalyzed primers are very tough. Try some Goof Off first, go to lacquer thinner after if needed. Work in small inconspicuous areas first to see results. Treat the vinyl with a vinyl dressing after. Good luck.

 Check out some of these products from GOO GONE... Maybe one of their products will work on your primer paint without damaging the vinyl surface.

You should first spray some of the same primer on a scrap surface and then test different solvents beginning with the least volatile and then work your way up to more aggressive solutions. Once you find one or two that soften or remove the primer then test that product on a section of vinyl that cannot be seen such as where it wraps under the floor or a hidden side panel. Use a white cloth and see if any color from the vinyl transfers to the cloth or if the vinyl is permanently affected. The vinyl may soften but return to normal afterward. Only after all those tests give you some confidence in your approach would you want to begin working on the problem area.

I would try some goop without pumice. It has lanolin and I have used it on vinyl to soften it up and clean it. If it doesn't get it all then you could try some other solvents on an inconspicuous area before trying on problem area.

Brake cleaner works great for getting grease out of carpet, wonder if a little on a rag would remove the paint. Use caution, I never used in on Vinyl.

Obtained some Goo Gone. After lots of rubbing, was able to remove some primer. Then tried some 409 cleaner and a stiff brush. After 4 repeat tries with lots of elbow grease, most of the primer eventually came off.

Glad you got it off. Some primers are impervious to nearly everything.
