63 corvair powerglide selector cable removal

Post by Datsolow »

Hi all,
Can anyone advise on how to remove this? do I remove from inside the car or can it be disconnected from the powerglide unit?
Many thanks Paul

The cable can be disconnected at either end.

Dash end: Unclip tiny little e-clip at end of cable and use super-short (modified) 5/8" wrench to unscrew the retaining nut.
Trans end: Disconnect retaining strap on body, remove cable retaining bolt (usually 7/16", sometime 3/8"), disconnect throttle rods from trans TV lever, pull out cable.

Note: cable housing is super brittle these days and any crack you create will leak badly when the car is parked for a few days. If you want to ensure the cable's safety, remove the tunnel cover and unclip the cable inside so it can make a big "S" when you push the cable back. Also, support the trans and remove the trans support bracket so you don't have to muscle the cable through the little oval slot in the bracket.

Depends on what you are doing? If you are pulling the engine or just replacing the cable??
