Bearing question...

Post by acarlson »

I finally got around to splitting the case today. I am probably going to have to get the crank reground. However, my thrust bearing has wear marks on the side. Is this normal wear and tear or a more serious problem ???

Shouldn't be an issue with new parts. Of course you will want to check the crank surfaces and check the end play during assembly. I wonder if an operator along the way had the habit of holding the clutch pedal to the floor at stoplights.

Did you measure the end play on the crank shaft? If it is within specifications then I would not sweat it.

I did not measure endplay since I'm replacing the bearings and I don't have the new bearings yet. I didn't think measuring endplay with worn bearings made any sense.

While we're talking endplay - what are my options if it is out-of-spec ?

20/20 hindsight now but checking the endplay with the old bearings in place would have confirmed if they were still in spec or not so you could make good choices later. I've not rebuilt a lot of engines but I've never measured endplay out of spec after new bearings. Probably not going to be an issue for you.

On many new GM bearings that surface was bare copper many times so the fact that it does not have the tin plating does not mean it is worn.

Not an ideal method for checking but you could put one of the thrust bearing shells back on the crank and check clearance with a feeler gauge. Will let you know if it's badly worn.
