140 High Volumn oil pump

Post by gnrand »

I wanted to get opinions on the pros and cons of using a HV pump on a street engine.
Thank you

It does the same harm as the high volume high pressure pump does on the Buick V6's. It wears the drive tang on the distributor and can elongate the holes in the drive gear that the roll pin goes through. Plus it eats horse power.
I would pass.......Unless you are building a road racer with a front mounted oil cooler and super loose clearances.

High Volume oil pump topic comes up every so often.

Not recommended for a daily driver with good bearings. The stock pump in proper condition (and with the correct plate spacing per gasket) is more than adequate. Any excess pressure above the oil pressure regulator setting causes flow to be routed back to the pump input and this wasted mechanical energy simply heats up the oil - that's correct a high volume oil pump heats up the oil more than a stock pump.

Also the drive shaft/gears have to work harder.

So what's a high volume oil pump good for - racing. The race folks can increase HP/torque by reducing the parasitic bearing drag - LOOSE CLEARANCES that require higher oil volume to maintain pressure. A "loose" race engine is usually rebuilt at short mileage intervals so it tolerates the large clearances. Not advised for a street engine.

Also - NO DON'T INCREASE THE OIL PRESSURE - it's harmful to modern bearings.

Sometimes the factory specs do work the best.
