Engine ID

Post by acarlson »

Is there an ID somewhere for the type of engine the car was built with ? For example the Corsa could have either the 140 4x1 or the turbo.

the body tag will have a O in group 4 if the car had a turbo. turbo cars have a cut out for the exhaust pipe - 140 cars dont.

theres other things to look for also - but these 2 are are ez to check.

From the body tag you posted previously, your 65 Corsa convertible came with a 140, not a turbo because Option Group 4 does not show an "O" in that group. Do you have the single large exhuast cutout in the right rear? If it was added later you can usually tell that it was cut out by hand.

Dave,

I do believe it was built with the 140. The turbo engine was swapped in by one of the previous owners. I was just curious how/if the engine was ID'd somewhere in the body tag.

Thanks.

Only in some cases. The body tag info was used to identify options that Fisher Body workers needed to know about as they built the chassis. A required tail pipe cut-out in the rear lower body needed to be dealt with before the chassis was sent to Chevrolet for final assembly so in Group 4 there was a code to indicate if the chassis would have a 180 turbo engine.

The decision at assembly time for a 500 or a Monza (VN 101---, 105---), that might get a 95, 110 or 140 engine, did not require any pre-planning by Fisher Body so no engine codes were needed on the body tag. Some engine codes were known by default. If the chassis was shown as a Corsa model (VIN 107---), and there was not a Group 4 code for a 180 turbo, then everyone knew it had to be a 140 because you only had two engine option in the Corsa package.

When the chassis got to Chevrolet for assembly, the build sheet provided the final info needed and not many paper build sheets have survived after 50+ years.

Is that the correct badge for a '65 Corsa Turbo ?
