what size inserts do I need for the bolts on a corvair pan
are they 1/4"x20 anf if so how deep?

yup......1/4x20. youll need something 1/2" or 5/8" long.

found a pack of 100 of the 5/8 long ones for 15 bucks

In order to change the O-rings on the oil return tubes can I get to them by removing the valve covers
it has been so long since I overhauled that engine I don't remember that was back in the early seventies and I am 84 and my mind can't remember

Yes you get to them by removing the valve covers and the bottom cover next to the oil pan cover( easier to get them out and guide them back in) then pull the rocker arms. I laid them all out in order so the went back in order. No sure you need to do that. But I thought it would be a good idea since I had never done it before

Do not remove all the lower rocker arm studs at once. Do them in pairs to reduce the risk of possible head gasket issues.
