Hood Stabilization

Post by wbabst »

Not really a mechanical question, but years back when I was prepping my friends Nova for paint I was having a hell of a time trying to block the hood. At the factory GM had put dabs of some kind of adhesive that bound the inner frame to the outer skin. Over the years and 300,000 miles put on the car they had separated and fallen out. I went to the paint supply store an was able to purchase the same stuff and put in new dabs between the panels. Once they cured the hood was stable enough that it could be blocked out. The rear engine cover on the Corvair suffers from that same problem, although I don't think GM put anything on those hoods.

What I am looking for is the name of that adhesive, or if anyone knows what is available now that would work?

Thanks

Go to your local professional autobody supply store and tell them what you are trying to do. They should be able to provide you with info on current catalyzed and non-catalyzed automotive adhesive/sealants that will do what you need.
