In the Belly of My Beast so much slop in shifting cable

Post by TheCommish »

As i have been working underneath, with the belly pan off the cable drops down around 8", when i install the belly pan, will this be a problem?
7/20/16-I loosened the PG Lever assay, and wrapped the PG Cable around to the left if the brake petal, that problem solved. Still attempting to adjust PG Cable.

The clutch has a cable and the parking brake has a cable; maybe it's one of those? Both of those have strong springs at the rear. Are the springs in place?

Yes, it turns out it was his powerglide cable. No big deal though there should be a couple of clips holding it up.

Hey cnicol, my shifting cable has been in the same position since i mentioned the slack in it 3 weeks ago. Today was the first time i drove the car, and the lever is all screwed up, no reverse, no neutral, just drive. Where should i be looking to correct it? PROBLEM SOLVED !

Sounds like the cable going into the trans is not in correctly. Be sure to click on the attachment to enlarge it. Take the retainer bolt out, that holds the cable in & pull on the cable, it shouldn't come out if it's in correctly. If it pulls out then you have to put it in according to the directions. Disconnect the lever, turn it down then put the cable in then turn the lever up & try to pull the cable out. If it wont come out you have it right.

:dontknow: I looked back through some of your earlier posts and discovered that you have a 1964 Corvair. Shift linkage check and adjustment is covered in the attached section of the 1961 Shop Manual. Corvair Powerglide Automatic Transmission Service Guide - PART 1 OF 5 also discusses the shift lever and cable, and can be used to supplement the basic factory shop manual. I included the 1964 Shop Manual supplement, but it does not seem to have anything further on the shift linkage adjustment.
