You need a grease that will flow. Something thick enough to not leak out of the box(gear oil will leak) but something fluid enough that it will stay in the gears. A good 00 grease should work fine. Some mix their own concoctions. I use penrite steering box lube which works well for me.

Yes the steering box used a special lube, but in a pinch hypoid gear oil works fine, but expect it to leak a little. Some mix up there own lube (consistency between gear oil and chassis grease) or buy the lube for the 60's Corvette steering box sold by Vette vendors.

If the box ITSELF is making noise - it's probably time for a rebuilt one. I suspect it might be another suspension part squeaking. Bottom line - steering is a critical safety function and if you are not knowledgeable about the front suspension it's time to have an expert examine it.

Good old John Deere. They used to have the Early and Late fan bearings. Made in USA. Their application is for planters and had great prices. But like most everything, they now have them made off shore because New Departure has gone off shore for this application.

1 tube is plenty. John Deere farm equip dealers keep it in stock. Since you there are no JD farm equip dealers close to you, call Coastline Equip in Long Beach 562-272-7400 and see if they can get a single tube.
