Adjusting Rockers While Engine is off?

Post by jmikulec »

I know that it is best to adjust the rockers when the motor is running. How do I do it the old fashioned way? How tight do I want the nut to be before I do a 1/2 turn on it. I am tuning up a 65 corvair 110 hp.

Follow the step by step procedures in the shop manual.

Do you have a copy of the shop manual I just have an off brand manual that doesn't say everything.

Does anyone have any extra valve covers I could use to make a contraption to actually adjust the rockers while running.

Repro shop manuals are available from Clark's Corvair part and other vendors.

You can download a pdf of the 65 manual here http://1969corvair.com/techpages/Corvai ... Index.html

I tried adjusting the rockers with the engine off and did a 1/2 turn after I could wiggle the rockers barely. I then turned the car on and heard a little whining probably from the dry push rods. Should I leave it on for a while to oil up in there. I had it on and turned it off and took the valve cover off and there wasn't one drip of oil.

If it were me, the first thing I would do would be to check the oil pressure using a mechanical gauge. How long did you run the engine?

How much pressure should there be? I did just replace the push tube I rings and all the oil has drained out.

Did you drain the oil?
Did you replace the filter?
Did you refill the the crank case?
Does the oil pressure light work? Did it go out?
Did you install the push rods correctly? They only go in one way. There is a hole in the side that must be on the rocker arm end.

There should be about 35 PSI oil pressure when the engine is cold. Oil pressure when warm varies with RPM in the range of 10-35.

Funvairs list is good - I would check and confirm those basics too.

I made sure that the little hole on the side of the push rod was in there correctly. So that the rockers will get oil. And also I started it today without the valve cover and found the loose rockers and tightened them up. And the oil was squirting out a lot. I probably just needed to let it run for a little.

I replaced the o ring seals on my push tubes on my 65 monza. I found two bent push rods while servicing. I replaced them with 64 push rods. I put the hold down plate with the upside down "U" facing me. I set the valve lash. I turn it on and it makes this high pitch squeaking noise. I turn it off and hear this tapping noise every few seconds coming from the engine compartment. I need help and have no idea what is going on. What is wrong?

Sounds like you may have installed the push rod guides upside down. The chamfered side goes out (toward you).

I installed the guide plates on the drivers side with u facing towards me. It was fine. So the u should face towards the engine on the passenger side?
