My 1st Vair - 1965 Corsa 140-4 hardtop

Post by SteveH »

Hey folks,

Thanks again for the cool site and all of the great advice!

I made the plunge this weekend and bought my first Corvair. It is a "field find" that I found on Craigslist for $1000. The car was gutted but after a clean out and sorting of the pile of "junk" inside, it seems to actually be mostly complete. Kinda like a big model kit that was stored badly...

I see that pics need to be hosted elsewhere, so I will get them sorted out and uploaded on my web server, then I will start posting pics (if that is the usual plan around here)

Photographs can be hosted on other public websites, and then shared here using the photograph image URL. Alternately, individual photographs can be uploaded directly to the Corvair Forum.
If you are not familiar with posting pictures on the Corvair Forum, here are some guidelines. I wrote these instructions a while ago to try to help new members of the Corvair Forum with posting pictures. There are two methods. Hopefully these guidelines will help you...

To be able to post pictures, always use POST REPLY — not QUICK REPLY — to open the full-featured editor.

There are basically two ways to post a digital photograph on the Corvair Forum. The first, illustrated below, involves inserting an image URL address between two Img markers. The URL image address is copied from an existing picture on the Internet. The source image can be another picture already on display within the Corvair Forum, or it can be just about any picture, artwork, or graphic image that is publicly viewable by anyone on the Internet. You simply need to copy the source image URL temporarily to the computer "clipboard", and the paste that URL address within the text you are writing on the Corvair Forum (between the two Img markers). Once you have posted your text, the Corvair Forum software will simply grab the image from the source URL and will display it embedded within your text (at the location where you embedded the Img markers and source URL).

For example, I am embedding the First Place Image and Avatar Image images to the left of this post within the text here by copying their URL addresses between two Img markers.

Here is what the above text looks like unsaved...
For example, I am embedding the First Place [img.]images/ranks/COTBLACKPLATE.png[/img] and Avatar [img.]download/file.php?avatar=2689_1344285003.jpg[/img] images to the left of this post within the text here by copying their URL addresses between two Img markers.
Maybe this illustration will help...

You can manually copy images and pictures from other Corvair Forum posts that were embedded as uploads by right-clicking each image in the source with your right mouse button and selecting Copy image URL from the menu choices. Doing so will invisibly copy the image URL address to the computer temporary data buffer called a clipboard. Using the Img button at the top of the editor screen, and the standard PC copy and paste technique will allow you to paste that URL address data from the clipboard into your Corvair Forum text (surrounded by bracketed img markers), which will display as the original picture or image when the post has been saved for display. It illustration below depicts the process.

Click on image to enlarge for better viewing...
Corvair Forum Image Transfer.jpg
NOTE: This same technique will allow you to copy just about any graphic, photo, or other displayed image from any public website, Facebook, or other website that is not secured and is publically viewable by right-clicking the desired image, obtaining the image URL, and then pasting the URL with Img markers into your Corvair Forum text.

=========================================================================

The other method of embedding pictures involves uploading the images that you have physically stored on your computer. Simply scroll down in the editor and click on the Upload attachment tab >> Choose File >> Add the file. You can upload many pictures, but you have to add them one at a time. The Corvair Forum operating system does not allow for batch uploads of multiple files.

Either way, the pictures you upload will not be visible as photographs until you click on Preview or Submit.

Cool, nice instructions, Thank you!

Here is the Pic is responded to on CL.
01 - CL pic 1.jpg
The "stash" of stuff
04 - Arrival.jpg
Most of it layed out.
18 - Arrival.jpg

So, I have two sets of door panels, one set monza, one set Corsa

I have a Spyder 180hp Air cleaner (?? why?)

I have the dual snorkel air cleaner but not the "x" crossover portion

I plan to make this a light fun autocross car for my family and I to play with.
The motor and trans are going to have to come out and be completely re-done.

Oh, and I am missing the drivers side fender "Corsa" script.

I looked at the first 25 photos or so....and I think you stole this car...looks pretty nice for what you spent on it. I would give you 1500 for it right now if in NC close to me. Love that color.

Where did you find this treasure?

Just get a nice sandblaster...some purple cleaner and wire brushes and some dawn and you will be amazed at how nice most of the parts will clean up...but that interior...well....better find a good shop to fix those up with new foam, covers etc after you strip them down...clean and fix the springs etc....the seats in my 49 needed a lot of fixing and de-rusting etc...but look pretty nice now.

found it on Craigslist. The guy has another 65 but it is a Monza Auto (same $1000) The car was in Red Bluff Calif.

I will check out "purple cleaner". I usually use wire brushes, then Rust-Mort, and then POR-15

I will do my own upholstery. I do a lot of sewing for my other hobbies, including collecting Victorian Sewing machines and I have several which were made for leather sewing, so that is not an issue. The issue is finding the padding. I can make my own but it is a pain to get right in my experience.

Edit: I am SO not at this stage yet, but I was wondering if there is a write up somewhere about redoing the Corsa Dash/Glovebox "wrinkle" finish?

Funny you should ask, we were just talking about that. I'm about 3/4 of the way complete on my overlays. There are some real great details here: viewtopic.php?f=80&t=9826

Congrats on your find! :tu:
No stock parts were harmed during the on going restoration of this Corvair....ok, maybe a little bit.

Its my kind of car....will show you my first one before and after.

I just saw a post about re doing the dash on a late model...might go to google and type in what you want to find....it works better than the searches on these forums...it usually brings you to the forum...but what you are trying to find vs every thing you are NOT trying to find...and it could be on the other corvair forum.

I see the above post found the post....good!!!

Nice! (Curious, why did you drop the fender lights?)

Thanks for the Link Edz! I'll read up on that.

Yeah, I'm actually an IT manager by profession so I am pretty familiar with Google, hehe... but there are SO may references to wrinkle paint that are not "how to's", that I figured it was quicker to ask.

One other sourcing question: Mine has the woodgrain steering wheel (on the telescoping shaft, how COOL is that!!!) is there a recommended way to deal with the cracked/shrunk outer ring? (other than sending it to some expensive service place)

Hello Steve

Nice find, congratulations. I must purchased a 1966 Corvair Monza too. You have a much better starting point than I do, you will have a great car in no time.

Steve, that's a very cool car.

First of all, it's actually Cypress Green, not the light color you see there. Cypress Green is the J-J code on your body tag, and it's a very attractive dark metallic green. My first Corvair was a Cypress Green 140 Corsa coupe with a black interior.

Here's a link to my page for '65 factory colors:

http://wittelaw.com/personal/colors/1965.htm

As you already know, the tele column and mag wheel covers are very cool options. It looks like you have some rust but it's not anywhere close to terminal.

Regarding your wood steering wheel, I think the easier course may be to just replace it. I THINK I have found a direct reproduction replacement that isn't too expensive. You will probably want to ask some questions regarding dimensions and the like, but here's the link:

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll ... 50000170a#

This is a picture of that wheel:

Image

I can't imagine that you'd spend less than the $220 they want restoring your wheel.

What are your long term plans for the car? Full restoration? Stock, or something different.

I am also going to be refinishing my instrument cluster wrinkle paint, so I will be reading and posting along in my "Upgraded" thread as well (link at the end of my signature block).

Good advice, and thanks for the link! Probably cheaper. My other hobby is restoring and showing Victorian Sewing Machines so I tend to be a bit of a purist and prefer to keep original parts with a machine if possible, but it can always go in a "to be kept with the car's stuff" box/pile.

The inside of the deck lid and trunk lid are still the original color. Cool. but since I am not going for a concourse resto, it's probably going to be redone as the Chevy equivalent to B5 Blue..
(recovering mopar dude here)

My current hit sequence list is:

Seal the exterior to prevent additional damage
.....Weather striping
.....Windows (Driver is completely disconnected from the working track system)
.....Exterior/Interior surface rust mitigated
.....Exterior Rot Repair

Make it run
.....Engine & Trans removal and repair
.....Electrical Repair
.....Headlights and tail lights

Drivability
.....Suspension repair
.....Steering maintenance
.....Tire Replacement

Pretty
.....Paint
.....Upholstery
.....Interior

Fuel....Fun!

Then do some classic autocrossing.
After that I may be doing some mods, but I really want to get to know my Corsa in its original form first. Then start doing mods.

Ironically, if I could change one thing about my '65 140 coupe, instead of red it would be Cypress Green, but at the time it was painted I kept to the stock color. To be fair, I'm now changing lots of things from stock, but back when I had it painted I wanted to be original.

The stock '65 color that's probably closest to B5 Blue is likely Mist Blue. I also like that color, which my convertible wears:

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to the car.

Cool! I was thinking more along the lines of this. (i think Nassau Blue (13057) may be closer)

Since my lady's colors are Blue and Yellow, I may do yellow stripes when we are ready to race.
