I'll put them on and do a quick pic tonight when I get home.

FYI - For those in the bay area that may want to meet, I will be going to my 1st CORSA meeting tomorrow in San Leandro (without the Corvair of course)

Gotta give a shout out to Jeff at CorvairRanch. The guy has the patience of a saint! I've been a pain in the backside and he just keeps rolling with it....

I am finalizing my parts order today and hopefully we will have the parts by next weekend and really get this underway!

Oh, and here she is with the pretty caps on..

I have a quick question or two. (I hope)

My 65 Corvair Corsa came with the 140 4x1bbl setup. In the trunk it also had a pair of 1bbl's with linkage connecting them. One of the pair has a tag "7025024" which my research says is from a 110 Automatic. My question is, what is the difference between an carb for an auto vs a carb for a Manual? and is there a difference between a 110 and a 140 carb?

The description below is from the DELCO ROCHESTER - Models H, HV Carburetor Service Manual.
4x1 140 hp Carb Description.jpg
The chart below is from the 1965 Chevrolet Corvair GM Heritage Center Specs (Adobe Reader page 61). The chart indicates that the 95 hp engine Rochester part number and the 140 hp (primary) Rochester part number are the same, and the specs do not differentiate between the manual transmission and automatic transmission, with the same carburetors used with either transmission.

If you are going to switch back to original carbs - get Bob Helts book on Corvair carbs. This is one of the best investments I have made to improve the driveability of my Vair.

"Switch back"?? The engine that is in the car has the original AL (I hope) 4x 1 barrels and I'm planning to stick with that. It's just when I looked at the extra carburetors & I looked the number up it said that it was for an automatic and for the other engine and I was wondering what the differences might be. If they are the same carburetors then I can rebuild them as well and have them as backups. I can also practice doing the venting/jet relocation stuff.

Sorry guys, I have been putting together a site on my webserver for the Corsa and forgot to keep posting here while I do.

The dismantling is proceeding well. The interior is gutted, all windows and regulators removed, all of the trim is removed, and the removal of old paint is underway.

I got a visit 2 weeks ago from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District after a neighbor complained when I sprayed primer. Turns out it is OK if I use aerosol cans, but NOT if I use a compressor and gun, however, every time they complain, they will have to do an investigation and visit... STUPID

Then last week I got a complaint letter from the HOA because I left my 10x10 sunshade up during the week. (against the HOA rules) So, I am going with a roll on paint job to appease the natives...

The parts from Corvair Ranch arrived!!! Woo Hoo! The main part I was waiting for was this under window panel
20150725_110727.jpg
The panel is over curved, so tonight I will be going through a crosspeening process to straighten it a bit
20150725_110840.jpg
The trimming is easy if you have the right tool...hehe (Beverly B2 Throatless Shear)
20150725_122615.jpg
and it makes fun leftovers!
20150725_123448.jpg
Here it is with the ends trimmed and ready to weld in this weekend.
20150725_122913.jpg
Lots of surface area on these beasties... The good news is no surprises (yet)
20150726_181457.jpg
Last Pic. I also picked up this Corsa Chrome shifter cover for a great price (Thanks Jeff!!) and used the Wrinkle paint to restore it

Was out of town on Saturday, so Sunday was the only day I got to play on the Corvair.

I am continuing the stripping to steel and took this shot to show the tools I am using.

The top is a straight wire wheel that does a nice job of taking off the surface stuff. If I was just sanding and repainting, I'd use this more.
The middle is a twister wire wheel that takes off everything down almost all the way to the steel. makes quick work of the repaint and original paint.
The lower is the "Rust Stripper" disks (epoxied sponge looking thing). Does a GREAT job of bringing it to steel, but removes the paint slowly and wears out quick.
The best sequence so far seems to be twisted wire wheel then rust stripper wheel.

I got the crosspeaning done on the lower window panel. it fits!!!

Cross Peaning marks visible

I am prepping the windshield and back glass frames so that I will have all of my welding ready to be done at once. Then I'll rent a MiG for the day.

Steve, re: the new windshield sil piece. Did it not match the correct radius? How much massaging was needed, and where did you purchase? Corvair Ranch?

Viewmaster - When initially tested it, if one side was held in place, the other side was about 5/8" "up" from where it should be. I used a metalworking technique called cross peening where you use a hammer that has a wide narrow face. since it causes more stretch in one direction than the other it causes expansion on that side. The piece is now within about 1/4" (I think a little tension may not be a bad thing in the unibody)

TikiRalf - I use a 6 inch diameter 1" wide "fine" wire wheel mounted on a 1/2 hp bench grinder and a wire brush (like a steel toothbrush) to get into the corners. The nice thing about this process is that it removes the buildup without effecting the metal much. It leaves the original finish mostly intact, so you can see where it was finished vs not finished at the factory. I use WD-40 as a release agent when using the small hand brush. (Tried it with the wire wheel but WAY too messy.
