Re: The inevitable happened.
I tried a search to try to figure out this often-seen upside-down picture phenomenon. I found the following article...

Re: The inevitable happened.
Well I picked up a parts car today with a 140 and a 4 speed to swap into my 67, problem is I may have jumped the gun a little bit here. The parts car is a 65 ( at least thats what i was told, i havent checked the body tag for myself yet) and after a little bit of reading I'm realizing that the pedals dont cross over from a 65 to a 67, is that true? and is that all that won't work? but I guess even if that wont cross over at least I got a windshield out of it and some good emblems and latches/ door handles. Paid 800 for it, and it runs and sounds great.

Re: The inevitable happened.
True story, the wider column on the '67 prevents using the pedal assy from a '65-6. Some other parts are a little different too but since you have a donor car you'll have everything you need. If you want reverse lights, let me know and I can walk you through how to make that happen. 65 4-sp is different than 67 MT and both of those are different than PG.
You'll want to round up a pedal set from a '67-9. Ideally a '69 so you can take advantage of the 1-year clutch cable with a heim-joint end rather than the trouble-prone ball end clutch cable.

bummer :( was so excited because I got the whole donor car and thought I'd be up and running in no time... well thats never the case hahaha guess I have to track down a pedal set now.cnicol wrote:True story, the wider column on the '67 prevents using the pedal assy from a '65-6. Re: The inevitable happened.
Ok, new plan... possibly. What about a hydraulic clutch assembly? I've seen quite a few of these setup on buggies but never on a full corvair. I think this would be worth a try, and it would be nice to not have to push and hold so hard on the regular clutch pedal. heres a kit im looking at.

Or, since you have the donor car, you could use the steering column from the 65.

Am thinkin about it actually. We'll see. The more I think about it though the more I like the idea of a hydraulic clutch. There's even hydraulic throughout bearings you can use as well.jeffinpa wrote:Or, since you have the donor car, you could use the steering column from the 65.

Re: The inevitable happened.
Pulled the engine, trying to decide how much of it I want to go through right now since it was sounding really good. May just throw it in and wait until winter to rebuild it. Get some drive time in this summer:)

Engines in! have a lot of work to do to get everything finished including all the modifications for the manual transmission. Sure takes a while when I only want to work for an hour or two after work hah.

Re: The inevitable happened.
Well I got quite a bit done today, everything below the car is hooked up with the exception of the clutch assembly. Still trying to decide how to go about that.
Have any info on this swap? The pedal I was looking at is too tall and just wont quite fit without some serious modification. I'm wondering how hard it would be to go ahead and use column and clutch pedal assembly from the 65. I'm still looking into other hydraulic setups that might work though.jeffinpa wrote:Or, since you have the donor car, you could use the steering column from the 65.

Re: The inevitable happened.
Saw a post on the corvaircenter forum of a guy that made a hydraulic clutch and I decided to go ahead and do that with a few modifications. Here's some progress from today. got all the parts I need so far for about $140.
Also I've been tracking the cost of this build and for everything so far including purchase price of both corvairs I'm at about $2300. Definitely the cheapest build I've done yet, and I honestly think one of the higher quality ones too.
