Rolling my 65 Greenbrier

Post by vintagestan »

I decided to roll my Greenbrier, after some research online. Since the body is nice, I decided to give it a shot- it had fairly new paint, but not the best job and not the color I dig. (White with blue). So I'm going for green with a white stripe. I've got one coat on- using marine paint, 2 part urethane. It dries very hard and durable- and to a nice gloss- gonna do about 4 coats and a wet sand, followed by a clearcoat, sand and buff- I think it will come out pretty nice. Just started yesterday...

I actually bought Super Marine Paint- I think it's basically the same, but Interlux didn't have the green I wanted. It's a two part urethane- comes with the hardener and reducer. Goes on very thinly and you can watch it self level- after a half hour or so, you can barely see any roller marks and the next day you can sand/level it out- seems to work well. We'll see!

I'm about 99% sure my next repaint will use that same method. It's so much easier for the "at home" painter.

Yes, it's forgiving- you can go back and sand flaws, and from what I could tell when testing it out, the wet sanding and buffing should make it look really nice. a little progress...

I've had a super busy week with work, so I'm slackin' a bit, but I'm about to do a final coat this weekend and then do some clear. Clear is not mandatory because the color is a high gloss, but I figured it would give me some extra wiggle room for sanding and buffing any orange peel. It's time consuming, but I think it will come out okay. I'll try and post some photos this weekend!

Thanks, Stan. I can see the potential benefit of the clear, including the durability factor. However, it might also make it more challenging to spot-repair in the future.

Regardless, it looks like a great project. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Getting lots of sanding done today- leveling out orange peel, etc. I'm switching between doing this and reupholstering my 65 coras seats, as I can do that inside and it breaks up the day a bit! Couple of shots- the second one is one coat of white stripe- I did this with an Earlex HVLP painter I got from Eastwood. (actually I got it on ebay, beacuse I found it somewhere $50 cheaper than Eastwood). It worked pretty well- first time using it- but with the air vents and contours, the white stripe was tricky to roll neatly. Still have sanding, etc to do, but I'm thinking it might come out decent for about $500. Pictures are of van, new 65 seats, and my boy on a late night cruise with my in my 64 spyder... Sundays when my girlfriend has to work all day means party time- me and my corvairs!

I actually kinda gave up on it. Parts of it came out really well, so it could be done but its a lot of work and my lack of time and patience drifted away. I ended up lightly sanding it and having someone shoot the clear, which gave it much more of a finished look. I would say that a patient and meticulous person could do a pretty good job because a paint does level well and to a flat shiny surface.
