'65 Corsa driver build.

Post by warwagon »

Rescued this '65 Corsa after sitting for 27 years. I recently lost my daily driver in an accident and decided to purchase and prepare this as a new replacement daily driver.
This Corvair is a 140 4 speed Corsa, but has no engine the original had a dropped valve seat. Plans are repair the rust build an engine and go over the rest. ImageImageImageImage

Thanks guys, I agree not too bad of shape at all to start with. It's better than the '66 Corsa my dad and I are working on (on break for 2 decades lol).
I found an electric fuel pump and rubber lines with a fuel distribution block on the car, working on getting the very old fuel out of the tank. Checked the numbers on the short block I got with the car and it's right.. a 140hp Corsa engine block for '65-'66. It has been rebuilt recently, it's .030 over and looks like it's in good shape but will tear into later and make sure it will be good for a 140 build. We have a good spare 110hp engine I will probably install in this car while we build the 140 from this short block. Got some 15" wheels are tires on the way for it and after those and engine are in the car, I'll patch up the few holes on body and she will be hitting the road. But for now the work continues....

Picked up some 15" Firebird wheels for the '65. They fit good even though they be for an F body, going to roll a 3" section on fenders for turning clearance. Not my first choice but free and silver goes with the top.ImageImage

Began a semi disassembly to clean the 110hp engine I'm going to be using at first. Lots of acorns, acorn caps and shells all over in the air flow cooling passages. Got to swap on another fan bearing housing, belt idler, distributor and carbs. Probably go ahead and do a rear main seal too when I have the clutch disc, flywheel, pressure plate and bell housing off.

Interesting how the breather tube is bent down to make a road draft setup

That is a standard road draft tube used on Corvairs from 60-62. 110 engines didn't debut until 64.

I would recommend dumping the road draft tube and replacing it with an appropriate Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. Road draft tubes were never as good at evacuating piston blowby crankcase contaminants as the PCV systems that were implemented in 1963. In addition to reducing air pollution, the PCV systems also reduce crankcase pollution that causes sludge buildup and oil contamination. They work well as long as you check and clean the PCV valve or fixed vacuum orifice periodically.

He mentions changing the top cover so maybe updating the PCV system is part of the change already.

He also mentions that this is a temporary engine while they rebuild the 140.

You guys read well lol. Definitely a temporary engine for this car, the draft tube and housing is leaving this engine, the housing is broken in half anyways. This is a RD code '65-7 110 engine my dad had in a late model coupe we scrapped years ago. He changed certain stuff over on this 110 (draft tube) long before I was born. I'll start building the RB code 140 I got with the car after August. Thanks for all the interest amd comments everyone.

More shots of the 110 as I tear it down and clean then assemble.
Got the log exhaust manifolds off, oil pan, top cover and 99% of the sheet metal. Not pretty inside but cleaning well. The bell housing cleaned up good and I installed a new rear main seal in it.ImageImageImageImage

Been busy on the side but still pressing on to get this done.
The bucket seats are Meh and the drivers is too tall. I have no more stock Vair seats that are not called for.I got Summit plastic race seats to go in. Ordered 2 12" turbo bullet mufflers, engine is pretty much done and ready to be fitted to transaxle. Pics of engine stuff to come.Image

Bullet syle turbo mufflers, never ran one like these before they will sound good and not like a glasspack. Grabbed two head pipes not pictured from my dad's stash to nearly complete exhaust system. Just need a few hangars and tail pipes.ImageImage
