Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
Re: Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
While I was in the process of taking out the fuel sender I tried to pull out a little more wire. So since it wouldn't budge I took off the pan to see if something was tangled. No luck but I did find another mice nest Now I know why the seats are kind of flat
Also I found out why the fuel gauge was semi stuck - the sender housing was totally full of junk
The tank was cleaned and sealed by the po.
A new sender from one of our fine venders will fix it up

Nice score! I have the tunnel off of mine today to replace the shift rod bushings and coupler pin. Yours will come together quickly once the weather breaks!

Thanks Am-Iron. I have been working on other areas of the Vair that I haven't started on my carbs yet

Hey, Jeremy I been watching waiting all winter for you to start. Nice find on the sending unit. Sometimes it is the simplest of stuff.

Re: Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
Thanks Jon. Even though it has been below normal temps (around freezing now) - it has been a good release to work on the Corvair.
Today I decided to do a compression check now that the heads are torqued down, the broken push rod is replaced and the valves have been properly adjusted
-to recap - the first compression test I did (last December) was 1-145, 2-135, 3-30, 4-150, 5-90, 6-160
Today it was 145,140,145,160,160,165
I am curious to see if it changes after some good fun driving
Hopefully by this weekend I will have the carbs done and the engine running

That is a testament to these engines. They are very resilient. I hope you drive goes well.

Re: Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
Here are some showing the carb cleanup process. I have been wanting to use my ultrasonic cleaner on some carbs since I purchased it two years ago
The carbs turned out great but the solution I used (simple green Pro HD) only softened up the black stuff in the throat of the carb. A simple old tooth brush and some light scrubbing easily took care of it.

Re: Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
Well I have had my Vair out about 3 times now Comparing it to the cars I test drove I feel like I have a strong runner here
There is still much to do on the mechanicals - there is a 2 drop oil leak at the crank pulley end that is not the crank seal or oil cooler. I think it is part oil pan gasket and possibly part rear engine housing gasket.
Then there is the 20 year old tires I picked up a set of Olds 14" rally wheels that I am in the process of cleaning up. These came with all the stainless steel trim bits (bonus!). I haven't had the car above 40 for more than a few seconds as there is some bad vibrations from those tires. I can tell this Monza wants to run free (big grin on my face when ever I drive it).
Enjoy the photos - I call this the NASCAR "look"
After a few hours work (mostly on the bead edges) these rims are looking great!

Thanks Scott. Working on the Vair after work has been a good way to relax and "wind down".

Re: Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
I'd love to relax and wind down working on the car - but then my kids find me and it's all over!
1st one - 65 Monza Vert with power top and 110 with a 4 spd. Was a bit dilapidated but fun, 2nd was a 1965 Corvair Monza Convertible. PG - 1960 or 61 or 63 80 hp engine - we think...
Re: Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
Drove the Vair to work today The new tires and rims work great! Before with the 20 year old 13" tires I could not and would not drive at highway speed - vibration plus the knowledge on how bad those tires were. The tire size I chose was 205/70R14. They seem to fit great even though the backspacing on the rims was a bit under 4 inches.
The trip went great today. I still have several things to work on but getting the car to this stage is a great encouragement. As I have read here and elsewhere - get your vair drivable and you will get much more enjoyment out of the project and repair process.

Looks great! I looked for red cars when I found mine and I was thinking "SO, THAT is what my car would look like if it still had paint and an interior, lol".
Great job!

Re: Cad-kid's 65 Monza - my first Corvair
Thanks, there will be a big update soon. Heads have been rebuilt by Ken, plus I have been doing much work while the engine is out - hope to have it back in soon.
