So, after purchasing this car, I rebuilt the two carbs on the left. Car fired up and ran ok (high RPM) enough to get me home and to the DMV. On the way home (2 blocks away) a gentle man at a light said it look like I was leaking gas. I got home and removed the air cleaner and the left rear secondary carburetor was FULL and over flowing.... IMMEDIATELY Shut the car off, disconnected the battery. As soon as I manipulated the rear accelerator rod the fuel drained....

My current plan is to leave it until Saturday when I can walk through the entire "set the linkages" and "adjust the carbs" process, but I was wondering if anyone had a quick idea on what could cause this?

Stuck float valve is likely. Once you fiddled with the linkage the butterfly opened and the fuel went into the manifold. If you're really lucky you can rap on the carb with a screwdriver handle and the seat will fully shut but for sure the fuel is not being shut off when the bowl is full. It could also be a float that has filled with fuel and sank.

Normally you would want to rebuild both primaries first and worry about the secondaries later. This keeps the engine balanced better when running.

Thanks!

I rebuilt the pair on the left because they were dumping fuel so bad there was unburnt fuel coming out of the exhaust.... It would not stay running at ALL before.

I did test the floats before I put the carbs back together

I will order a 4 carb rebuild kit then I will redo all four (the two I rebuilt were originally from my "Field Find" Corsa)

I was just hoping for a lazy quick fix to let me take the car to work and show it of... Patience...Patience.....

I've gone so far as to plug the fuel lines to the two secondary carbs so they were able to be left in place with no linkages connected until I could get to them later. The car drives just fine on the two primaries. I plugged the fuel lines using a bit of a ZipLoc plastic bag placed into the fuel fitting flare joint to block the flow. Crude but worked in a pinch.

Lots of progress this weekend. (two steps forward, one back)

Solved the carb issue. My driver side secondary had a stuck float needle valve.
I took it apart and cleaned it AGAIN and it works great now!

I was able to get the linkage set up correctly for all four carbs to be up and running correctly.

Got the timing set to 18deg

RPM's only down to 800 but getting better.

So, what I SHOULD have done is to pull the plugs, clean them and do compression checks....

What I DID was to remove the passenger side valve cover and attempt to do a valve adjust...
1. These are OTTO covers.... I DO NOT LIKE THE smooth mating surface idea, prefer the stock gasket holder design
2. I was able to tighten the first rocker more then 2 turns with no effect, so i loosened it back up two and wrapped the project for the day (assuming I am doing something wrong)
3. The OTTO cover used some super flat (old and cracked) gasket... I only had my rubber old style gasket. I used sealant on the cover side to hold the gasket in place, but it leaks like a sieve... I will try re-tightening it tonight. If it still leaks, I will swap in an original valve cover and use a typical cork gasket with sealer.

The GOOD news is that I was able to find that the touch-up paint from the auto parts store (GM " Victory Red") was a perfect match for my car. I had three areas (both rear pillars and the old antenna location) that were just primer, so now they match the car.

Second good news is that I got the main dash painted (DE1635 Semi gloss black) and it looks great.

Third good news is I got the dash bulbs replaced with LED's and they look really nice.
(BUT, they do make me want to find a better set of lenses...)

Unlike a solid lifter engine, or an overhead cam engine, Corvairs and other engines using hydraulic lifters do not require periodic adjustment of the valves to compensate for wear. A proper adjustment involves adjusting for zero clearance and then adding ¼ turn or so (shop manual says one turn) to center the hydraulic lifter plunger. The hydraulic lifter automatically maintains proper zero clearance and automatically compensates for engine changes as the components expand or contract with changes in engine temperature.

See page 6-22 in the attached shop manual section for static adjustment procedure. To adjust the valves on a running engine, see the video below...

An easy way to adjust Chevy Corvair valves without making a big mess: split a stock valve cover in half, that will catch the oil ( if you need a used valve cover, check our website http://corvair1.com/ under used parts, we have them in stock, as well as many other gaskets to finish the job) ....If you are doing a maintenance valve adjustment, install your oil catchers on both sides, let the engine warm up, and starting at either

Gaskets & Seals

At Corvair1, we only sell one type of gaskets: the best ones. No second choices that are not up to standards. All our gaskets are top of the line, made in the USA to Corvair specifications. These are the gaskets I have been using in my own rides, as well as customers',for many years. Most of them are thicker than the average ones out there, for better seal and performance. Note that often good gaskets can leak due to use of improper sealer. Many people use silicone, and too much of it, thinking that will stop any leak. That can actually make it worse. There are many types of sealers out there, some claim to be specially designed for gaskets, some will be real hard to remove when time comes to replace gaskets; my personal preference for sealer is lithium white grease, I would say it works awesome! and a little dab does the job. Our seals are some of the best ones, we offer choices of material when available: original polyacrylate and viton, the preferred choice for many....don't hesitate to call Rafee at 918-413-1548 with any questions you might have.

yeah...

I watched that and several other videos
I have both manuals
I have read the applicable parts
I have the modified cover.

So, after two full turns of tightening the first one, there was still no "ticking". I did not want to ruin something because i have bad hearing or not understanding what it should sound like, so I stopped.

Oh, and I did not remove the exhaust because I wanted to do it running and that seems like something that should have the exhaust on for....

The "ticking' occurs from loosening (counter-clockwise), not tightening. The running engine valve rocker is carefully loosened until it just starts to tick (from the rocker arm hitting the valve as it takes up excessive clearance). Then the valve rocker is slowly tightened until the ticking just stops (zero clearance). An addition ¼ turn is slowly added to move the hydraulic plunger into the lifter. This gives the lifter the ability to handle expansion or contraction of the engine components (even more pronounced with aluminum components on an air-cooled engine).

If the valve rocker is tightened too much, the plunger in the hydraulic lifter will reach the bottom of it designed travel limit. Further tightening could cause the intake or exhaust valve to never fully close (not a good thing).

Hydraulic tappet
:link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_tappet

Image

NOTE: The hydraulic lifters used in a Corvair are the same as those used in a Chevrolet V8. In a V8 the lifters are positioned somewhat vertically, with the camshaft in the center of the block and the rocker arms and heads above the lifters. But in a flat six Corvair, the lifters are positioned horizontally. There is an oil passage in the side of the lifter. In the normal operation of the engine the lifters rotate slowly in the lifter bore of the engine cases, and when the engine is shut off the oil passage sometimes ends up facing downward. This may allow the oil inside the lifter to drain, as gravity does its thing. The lifter empties, and when the engine is restarted the lifter may be noisy and may tick for a minute or so until engine oil pressure eventually refills the hydraulic lifter — quieting the noisy lifter. This problem does not occur in the V8, since the oil hole is never facing down to permit the oil to drain. It is a problem unique to the flat six Corvair engine.

updates: Found the matching touch up paint and put it to use. I Still need to actually remove it all and do the body work, but for now, it is one color.
