In the thread about Corvair powered oddities I posted several pics of kit cars .

Recently Back on Track: 1962 LaBoa Corvair Special

2/10/2009 Update: The car is now shown as ‘coming soon’ here at a dealer in Vero Beach, Florida.

2/9/2009 Update: Ten months later, this LaBoa race car was offered without reserve at the RM Ft. Lauderdale auction last weekend and sold for an astounding $10,175. That seems like a crazy bargain compared to the $73k asked last year! The previous consignor emailed us and was awestruck!

4/17/2008 Update: This sweet LaBoa race car has now made its way here to eBay for publicity sake. We have linked the photos below as well.

From 4/1/2008:

This LaBoa road racer was built for SCCA road racing and competed in many events throughout the 60′s before being garaged in 1967 when the builder passed away. It was entered in the 2007 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, but was withdrawn after one of the cast alloy wheels showed cracking. With a new set of wheels it would be ready to go. It is now available in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for $73k. Contact us if you are interested.

The rear end design of the “stress skin” body is beautiful, and we like the homemade alloys though it may be time to retire them. The car now runs a 2.8L flat-6 with Weber carbs and a Porsche transaxle. The car has a front mounted oil cooler and is configured as a right-hand-driver.

Image

The interior and driver seat look to have been recently upgraded, but all the gauges are vintage units. The PVGP entrant sticker is visible in the lower left.
Image

We like the grassroots feel and race history on this car. It is a good looking design and an authentic American special-bodied racer. The Corvair power is quirky, but the horizontally opposed engine is perfect for the design and can be tuned for plenty of power.

eBay Pick of the Week: 1962 LaBoa MKII Corvair Special
July 27, 2009

Posted by Brian Lohnes

ImageThis week’s eBay Pick is a killer little one-off road racing car from 1962. Creativity was the word back then and this Corvair powered, tube chassis, stressed skin, Lotus lookalike is a great example of that.

The seller is honest in saying that the car did not have a glorious history of race wins or significant performance records, but who the hell cares. Buying this car and racing it in vintage competitons, open track days, and hill climbs would be hella fun.

The car was commissioned by a man in Ohio back in 1962 who had a local machine shop construct the car. The original owner died some time ago and the car changed hands a few times and was actually street driven for many years.

It was constructed with the ability to swallow any number of engines and apparently the owner settled on Corvair power because he had connections with a Chevy dealer and had an ownership stake in a local used car lot.

This thing is beyond cool.

1961 LaBoa Cox Corvair Special

1961 LaBoa Cox Corvair Special news, pictures, and information.

In the early 1960s, Herbert W. Cox, an attorney from Arcania, Ohio, commissioned the Fitzgerald Machine Shop in Greenville, Ohio to build a road racing special. The frame deign was created by an aircraft engineer at Wright/Patterson Air Force base. The original plan was to use alloy, but the completed product was made of mild steel, which was a full 70 lbs. heavier. The 'stress skin' design was extremely rigid and was inspired by the Lotus Elan. The chassis is comprised of two 'tubes' measuring 9x3 inches in dimension. At each corner are four 1/2-inch square tubes. Running the length of the chassis is 1/16-inch sheet mild steel. The result was a vehicle that was much heavier than tube frame sports cars, but was capable of accommodating a variety of engines, ranging from 4-cylinder's to V8s. Herb Cox went with Corvair power. At all four corners are hand-cast alloy wheels and disc brakes. The body design was courtesy of Al Baurle of Chicago and was purchased from Competition Engineering in Wheaton, Illinois. The end result was the LaBoa Corvair Special.

Herb Cox raced the car during the mid-1960s in SCCA events. Records indicate it competed until around 1967. A short time later, Mr. Cox passed away due to cancer. The widow of Herb Cox sold the car. It passed through two owners who had used the vehicle in Ohio for street use. The fourth owner performed a restoration and fitted the car with a 2.8 liter flat six with 6 downdraft Weber carburetors. It has a Porsche transaxle, modern safety features. Since that time it has been used sparingly, even seeing some track time.

Here is a link to the LaBoa Body that was for sale. I would have loved to build that one! A finished car should be worth some decent money.

Thanks Michael, I tried to get the body but could not afford it. I thought how nice it would be with a Levair performance engine in it! Did you get to drive it?
