Re: Thunder Kiss '65 Project
Thanks CadKid!
I think it will look a lot better fully welded, with a few thick coats of paint on it!
It hasnt been easy to get the rear suspension to this stage. When I first mocked it up, with these alloys and tyres, I wasnt happy with how the wheels were sitting in the rear arches; so I stretched the wheelbase an inch. I got it all bolted back in today, and then wasnt so happy with that either... Oh, well
The other issue I've had is with getting the subframe square to a 50 year old body shell which isnt all that square to itself! The best I could do is set up datum points, measure everything every 10 minutes, and average out any symetrical discrepancies! When I re-work the front suspension, I will reference it all to the rear, so that the wheels run square, if nothing else does ;)
Anybody following this build should take just one crucial thing away with them; I'm a guy in a modest sized workshop, with hand tools, a 125mm grinder, a MIG, loads of steel offcuts and a friend who can turn stuff for me. There are some beautiful cars out there, for sure, but you dont need a second shop full of CNC gear to build that crazy project youve been daydreaming about. What you dont get to see is all the cut up and thrown away ideas that just werent working out; the countless card models and templates; the sketches. Sometimes I just sit a look, drink a cup of coffee and wait for that next epiphany!

Came down today, to get some welding done...
Ended up carving out the inner arches to mini-tub them
I just wasnt happy with the slim clearance behind those fat tyres!
Loads of space now; and a load more fabrication... Awww, man

Re: Thunder Kiss '65 Project
Here's the rear wheel position...
I would have to scrap all the mounts to bring it forwards again, and theres no actual conflict with the inners...
The arches need repairing anyway, so perhaps I can re-sculpt them at the same time?
Looking at it now, I cant for the life of me think why I stretched the wheelbase an inch, but its there in my notes, and I probably could have justified it at the time?

.... And in conclusion; that is how you fit an EJ20 into a '65 Corvair...
I thank you!

azdave - Thanks for the encouragement! It feels a long way to the end, but its about the journey, not the destination; apparently.... ;)
