different engine swap
different engine swap
Has anyone thought about swapping in a modern 5.3 ls4 and 4t65e-hd trans? 303hp at the flywheel stock and has smaller dimensions than most most ls v8's since it was designed to fit in the front of grand prix's and impala's.
ive though about it and the other though was on a 2.0 turbo LNF out of a cobalt ss.
i did some searching and noticed someone did an ls4 with a porche trans, but i would like to keep the 4t65e trans.

Re: different engine swap
I have a 2001 Lumina with a V-6 using that tranny. When it's up on the lift I've had simialr thoughts about a swap using that tranny and a beefier engine. Lot's on engineering to be done though.

Re: different engine swap
I was thinking the same thing when I bought this ex-rental car Lumina almost 2 years ago for $600 but it just looks and drives too good to part it out. I've been driving it ever since and it will turn over 200k miles this fall. Once it finally dies I'll have a powertrain for a test mock-up.f3racer wrote:yeah i was thinking about finding an entire trashed car...

Re: different engine swap
I had thought about 3.1 with the rear mount on a PG drive train but could not find parts to reverse the rotation. I am doing a 4.3 because it can be reversed with out a problem. A kelmark style adapter bolts it to the Corvair drive train. I had a bushing made to center the torque converter using the 14 inch 4.3 flex plate. The Corvair is a 1966 coupe with factory air. I have had great experience with 3.1 is why I hoped to use it. Old Jerry.
1965 Moza 110 PG. Just turned up 68000 miles. Was in storage since the mid seventies. Fun to drive, a survivor.

Re: different engine swap
GM had 2 big issues with the front drive 5.3
The first was the 4T65E transmission which was already over loaded behind the 3400/3500 engines.
Most will need a freshen due to excessive clearance in the intermediate clutch pack. Some as low as 40k miles.
The final drive is glass in those things. Here is one I took pictures of today. They do make some billet parts for them, but they get very expensive.
The second issue is the Active Fuel management which is basically solenoids that sit under the intake and direct or block flow to lifters during certain engine loads effectively varying the cylinder displacement. The big issues has been permanently collapsed lifters and/or pitted lifter rollers and pitted cam lobes.

Re: different engine swap
I owned an 06 pontiac grand prix gxp. I bought it with 41k and sold it with 151k on it. I knew of the trans issues so once mine went i sent it to triple edge performance to have the trans rebuilt with better stuff. my particular gxp never had an issue with the DOD valve train components. It did however cause some oil usage. i also had the DOD tuned out of the car though so that may contribute to the fact that i never had an issue. Plenty of other LS4 owners over on GMLS4.com have had the issues you speak of.
This particular swap will have a built transmission and DOD delete kit from maryland speed so that there are no reliability issues.

Re: different engine swap
if you want to put the motor in the middle (like where v8 guys do it) you can use any clockwise spinning motor to the origanal trans. i always though a saab b204/234 would be an awesome budget install. that could easily make 350 wheel torque
