Volkswagon transmission

Post by sailadams »

Has anyone here tried a VW transmission with a conversion engine like a Buick 215/Rover V-8? I am thinking specifically of trannies, both manual & automatic, strong enough to run in the VW vans. Is there a stronger spec unit for that purpose, or did VW use the same units across the board for air-cooled motors?

Hi I think the six rib gearbox is the strongest , used to mate to subaru turbo 300+bhp , also v6 & v8 engines all you need would be the conversion plate to connect your power plant.

The 6 rib is the 091, and can be built up to be pretty tough. After the 6 rib came the 094, with stronger diff gears and reverse. But, you will probably end up wanting different gearing than stock for a V6/V8 conversion.
Lots of transaxle info on thesamba.com and shoptalkforums.com

Thanks for the help, folks. You're right about the different gearing, I think. Looks like P/R ratios around 4 for most applications. I wonder how difficult it would be to sneek some Audi parts into the VW case....

Anyone have any thoughts on the automatic transmissions used on the buses etc? (Not the "auto-stick" that the bug came with.)

The Bus/Vanagon 3-speed automatic trans is a stout unit.

I would be most interested in seeing the rear axle and transaxle installation. Any difficulty maintaining the correct rear suspension geometry? Thanks for the info.

I copied what some other people have done with Porsche transaxles . Modified trans yoke to attach to the front of the 094 then had adapters made to go from u-joint to c/v cup / flange , If I was a better financed shade tree mechanic it would be better !!! Lol Ha it's on the road and I'm having fun along the way ... It's amazing how fun a some what modern engine with 140-160 hp can be.
If u can send me a message of some sort to help me post pics I will ... tried to share with Mike D ..didn't work ,I have some stuff up on Instagram (Corvairant)
