Our Current Ultravan Collection

Post by OttawaCorvairGuy »

Hello everyone,

Marie and I love the Ultravan coach!
We both love the idea of traveling. We talked about doing it when we first met.
However, life changes shortly after we got married kept us at or near home for 8 years.
In 2008 after 3 surgeries Marie was able to walk again without any aid(s). That is when we purchased the first two RVs from the same seller.

We purchased and took delivery of Ultravan #248 aka Itchy Feet in the spring of 2008. We thought we’d restore UV248 first. However, once we took delivery, cleaned it out and started a list; I found a major problem with the passenger side suspension. A few months later we purchased UV256 aka Itchy Feet II and it was delivered in the summer of 2008. I purchased UV256 to use all the best interior parts to ensure I could restore UV248. But not to let UV256 go to waste - I have always planned to customize it. Within one year I was able to get UV256 on the road with a Corvair drive-train, like most of the Ultravans came with. I wanted to be sure we truly were okay driving a coach like this and enjoyed having this style coach too. Throughout 2009 and 2010 we enjoyed taking it to some local car shows and cruise nights, even thought it still needed body work, paint and new interior. It was our ugly duckling and we could not be more proud to own her, and all our coaches. UV362 and UV512 were delivered Nov 2012. Marie loves the look of the Ultravan. I like the look and because I’m a retired mechanic; I’m in awe of how they were built and the story behind how they came about. I cannot wait till I finally have my garage. (Grin)

For more information about the Ultravan see History of the Ultravan at: http://www.corvair.org/chapters/ultravan/history.html

Some people might call us crazy. We simply feel blessed and stewards of these rare coaches.
In 2010 we purchased a smaller house but with a lot more land so we can carry out our plans/desires of having a small collection and private museum of Ultravans and Corvairs; which we plan to use each and every one as they were meant to be, and enjoy doing so.

The coaches in the pictures below are shown in order as we purchased them. Most of the coaches we currently have and plan to save are the ones most people would pass on and would end up in a junk yard at some point. Because I was a mechanic and I guess one could say “I root for the underdog” I get a great feeling to know I got a vehicle back on the road again. We plan to restore and use the nicer coaches first and work on the other ones over time while displaying them all at our farm.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.
Thank you for stopping by!
Sincerely, Tony

Nov. 14, UV362 on the left and UV512 on the right sitting in front of our barn the day they were delivered.

The following picture was taken November 22nd after I moved all the Ultravans behind the barn.
I have to keep them here until I have my garage and storage build.
UV362 is pulled to the edge of the concrete pad so I have room in the back to remove the drive-train.
About a month before I was able to get UV362 home I removed the running drive-trian out of UV256 which is the one on the gravel laneway in this picture.

The following picture was taken December 14th.
UV256 has been moved to the concrete pad where the Corvair 95 Van use to sit.
All our Ultravans are now on concrete for the winter and I'm all done for the day.

This is our collection so far to date.
If all goes well UV520, a Toronado RWD Ultravan, will be delivered this summer.

Some new Ultravan additions:

The Ultravan below arrived May 9th, 2013. The owner's brother Joe was kind enough to deliver it.
It is UV231 and it more than likely will not be part of our collection.
I just saved it from being scrap this summer.

UV231 in front of our barn May 9, 2013.
I have plans to put a 3.0 or maybe even a 3.6 Subaru complete FWD in the back of this coach.
I'm looking to do all the mechanical and/or body and paint and then put it up for sale.
I want to use the funds I get from this to help restore one of our Ultravans we plan to keep.

The Ultravan below is UV520 with a 69-70 Toronado FWD in the back.
I towed this one back home myself.
It was in Terre Haute, IN and I took it to my first Corvair Convention in Kalamazoo, MI.
Once the convnetion was over I towed it home.

UV520 and I arrived home at 8:40pm July 21, 2013.
I rushed to cut the grass under and around where I planned to put UV520 before it got too dark.

Hi Tony,

We recently purchased an Ultravan. Our first dilemma is retrieving it and getting it home and that's where you come in. I found several pictures of the towing bar assembly you built but am wondering if you have any specs for that so I can build one.

Thank you!!!

Damian and Christine
